Women's Soccer end season-opening weekend with second shutout, defeating Caldwell 4-0

Rindge, New Hampshire (September 6, 2015). Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team was able to put four un-answered goals on Caldwell Cougars in today's non-conference match at Sodexo Field. Madison Finlay (Plymouth, Mass) scored today's game winning goal, assisted by Nathalia Maria da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

The Ravens opening weekend ending 2-0-0, today's keeper Katie Weldon with a 1-0-0 record. Caldwell leaving today 0-2-0 on their season, goal keeper Mary Kanzler with a record of 0-2-0.

In the first half, the Ravens came out strong scoring their first goal of the match in the 5th minute of play. Finlay received the ball from da Silva just outside the box, where she was able to ditch her defenders, Cougars keeper Mary Kanzler came out to stop her but wasn't able and left Finlay with an open net.

With the Ravens taking an early lead, Caldwell noticeably stepped up their defense to keep the first half low scoring. The Cougars defenders were able to keep the Ravens from earning another scoring opportunity in the first half, after 40 more minutes of play the score remained 1-0.

Despite the heat the Ravens came back from halftime just as strong as the start of the game, recording their second goal in the 50th minute of play. Junior Sydney Stengle (Bridgewater, Mass) caught a high pass deep in the offensive zone, where she beat everyone to the goal, got the ball past Kanzler and found the back of the net.

The two teams battled it out until the next goal was scored in the 61st minute of play, a pass from midfield to just outside the box, da Silva was able to direct the ball to Nichole Donovan (Abington, Mass).  With the pass Donovan was able to shoot to and bury the ball into the left corner making the game 3-0.

A quick substitution for the Ravens put Nalina Valaydon (Longueul, Quebec) into the game, with fresh legs she scored the fourth and final goal of the game. In the 69th minute of play Donovan sent a header over Caldwell defenders and Valaydon was perfectly placed to take advantage of the pass and put the ball in the right corner of the net.

At the end of the match, both keepers Weldon and Kanzler recorded three saves. As a team Franklin Pierce took 12 shots in the match, while Caldwell University took six.

The Ravens play again September 12 at Pace University at 5:30 p.m.
