Pereira Double Sends Women’s Soccer Past No. 9 Adelphi, 2-0

Senior scores in each half; Ravens do not yield shot on goal

Pereira Pereira now has five goals in her last four games.

RINDGE, N.H. (October 4, 2014) – Senior forward Talita Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored the game's only two goals, in the 42nd and 72nd minutes on Saturday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team notched a 2-0 win over No. 9 nationally ranked Adelphi in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Senior goalkeeper Sam Whitney finished with four saves in defeat for Adelphi.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 5-3-1 (3-3-1 Northeast-10), while Adelphi falls to 6-2-1 (3-2-1 Northeast-10). Adelphi, which did not surrender a goal through its first seven games, has now lost two straight.

The Franklin Pierce defense stood stout throughout the proceedings on Saturday afternoon, as the Ravens did not yield a shot on goal throughout the 90 minutes, which allowed freshman goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) to earn her fourth shutout of the season and the win (4-3-1) without making a save. Whitney made four saves against six shots at the other end of the field and took the loss (6-2-1) between the pipes for Adelphi. Along the way, Franklin Pierce collected advantages of 10-3 in shot attempts and 6-0 in shots on goal.

Pereira scored the only goal the Ravens would need in the 42nd minute on Saturday. Junior midfielder Fernanda Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) sent a corner kick into the box from the right-wing side. In the aftermath of the corner attempt, the ball wound up at the feet of senior back Gabriela Vieira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), who had space to step into a shot from 25 yards out. Her shot was blocked by the defense inside the penalty area, but the rebound caromed straight to Pereira on the left-wing side of the box. Pereira finished her shot from there inside the right post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Pereira, who now has five goals in her last four games (5-0-10), added a second marker in the 72nd minute for her second multiple-goal game of the season. This time, graduate student forward Jannice Sundqvist (Harnosand, Sweden) had the assist, as she served a cross from the right wing which found the head of Pereira in the middle of the penalty area. Pereira headed the ball low, past Whitney and into the middle of the net for her sixth goal of the campaign.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Duffy Field in Colchester, Vt. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Saturday, Oct. 11 against New Haven at 4 p.m.
