NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 20, 2014) – The game's only goal came from sophomore forward Caroline Staudle in the ninth minute on Saturday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team was shutout, 1-0, by Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference play at Jess Dow Field. Freshman goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) had five saves in the loss for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-2-1 (0-2-1 Northeast-10) and is now winless in its last three, while SCSU improves to 2-3-0 (1-2-0 Northeast-10). The Ravens held advantages of 11-8 in shot attempts and 9-6 in shots on goal, but wound up on the short end of the score anyway.

The only goal of the afternoon came just 8:24 into the proceedings on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Kieran DeBiase used her head to send the ball into the goalmouth, where it was deflected by Cook. However, the loose ball fell to the feet of Staudle, who kicked it to the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Over the remainder of the first half, Franklin Pierce peppered SCSU sophomore goalkeeper Erica Ridella with five shots on goal, while Cook faced just one more before the intermission. Ridella was equal to the task on all five attempts though, as the Owls held the 1-0 lead into the break and through the rest of the afternoon.

In all, Cook finished with five saves against six shots on goal and took the loss (2-2-1) in front of the net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the field, Ridella sent away all nine shots on her goal to pick up the win (2-3-0) between the pipes for SCSU.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they return home to host Stonehill in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
