Women’s Soccer Suffers First Defeat of Season, 1-0 to Assumption, in Northeast-10 Opener

Ravens visit Merrimack Wednesday

Ravens Women's Soccer The Ravens held a 13-10 advantage in shot attempts on Saturday, but could not put home a goal and suffered their first defeat of 2014.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 13, 2014) – After posting back-to-back shutouts to start the season, it was the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team which went without a goal on Saturday night in a 1-0 loss to Assumption in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both sides at Sodexo Field. Junior midfielder Paige Radomski had the game's only goal in the second half for Assumption.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-1-0 (0-1-0 Northeast-10), while Assumption improves to 2-1-0 (1-0-0 Northeast-10).

The first half went scoreless on a soggy September evening in the Granite State, with Assumption holding a slim, 7-6 edge in shot attempts and a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Greyhounds would finally break the ice in the 52nd minute, with what would wind up as the game's only goal. Junior back Caroline Arnold swung the ball into the penalty area by serving up a corner kick from the left-wing side. With Franklin Pierce freshman goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) tracking the ball from her right to left, Radomski was able to get her head on the service and send it back against the grain. Radomski wound up heading the ball towards the ground, but with Cook caught going the wrong direction and no defender nearby, the ball rolled over the line for Radomski's third goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce's best chance to equalize came and went in the 78th minute. In the aftermath of a corner kick, senior back Gabriela Vieira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) put a header towards the net which beat the keeper, but the Assumption defense was able to keep the ball out of the net. The clearance attempt came to the foot of freshman back Nicole Galewski (Pembroke, Mass.) near the top of the penalty area on the right side, but her follow up sailed over the net and out of play.

Cook finished with four saves against five shots on goal, with her defense adding a team save along the way, and suffered her first collegiate loss (2-1-0). At the other end of the field, senior goalkeeper Rachel Edgin stopped all five shots on her net to earn the shutout and the win (2-1-0), with the defense chipping in a team save on the aforementioned Vieira header.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Merrimack for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Martone-Mejail Field in North Andover, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Wednesday, Sept. 24 against Stonehill at 7 p.m.
