Women's Soccer Rally Comes Up Just Short in 3-1 Setback at New Haven

Hannah Weagle scores team-high tying third goal of the season

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 12, 2013) – The Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team rallied to tie the score in the second half, but a pair of New Haven goals late propelled the Chargers to a 3-1 triumph over the Ravens on Saturday afternoon in West Haven, Conn.

The Ravens dipped to 4-5-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Chargers improved to 7-2-3 and 5-2-2 in league play.

Sophomore forward Hannah Weagle (Ipswich, Mass.) tied the game up at 1-1 for Franklin Pierce in the 55th minute when she headed in a crossing attempt from senior back Eize Vieira (Espirito Santo, Brazil), who notched an assist on the play.

Weagle’s strike was part of a 12-shot attack by the Ravens in the second half, as they ultimately held a 13-11 advantage in attempts after totaling just one in the opening 45 minutes.

The goal moved Weagle into a tie for the team lead with three markers, while also taking over the top spot on the squad in points with nine.

The momentum from Weagle’s goal was short-lived as Monica Yanez struck home a tally nine minutes later to put New Haven back up by a goal, and then scored once again in the 88th minute to put the match out of reach.

Yanez was one of four Chargers to log a team-high two shots apiece, while Vieira attempted three shots, which were the most in the match.

Moriah Saidel made an impressive six saves to backstop New Haven to victory, while her counterpart, Katie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.), stopped a trio of shots despite suffering the loss to fall to 4-5-2 on the year.

New Haven went up 1-0 in the sixth minute on a goal by Ashley Dawson, which was her first marker of the season.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Monday when the Ravens play host to Roberts Wesleyan at 3 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
