Late Goals Carry Franklin Pierce Women's Soccer Team

Mustonen, Kirby Score as Ravens Get Past St. Michael's, 2-0

RINDGE, N.H. (October 12, 2000) - Minna Mustonen (Helsinki, Finland) and Christine Kirby (Florida, N.Y.) scored in a span of just over five minute midway through the second half Thursday as the Franklin Pierce women's soccer team got past St. Michael's, 2-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference match at Crystal Field.

Freshman goalkeeper Tara McCuin (Highgate Center, Vt.) keyed a sting effort by St. Michael's (8-4-1, 5-4-1 NE-10) as they gave Franklin Pierce (9-1-1, 7-0-1 NE-10) few good looks despite the fact that Ravens outshot the Purple Knights, 33-1. McCuin finished with 13 saves.

Mustonen finally converted for the Ravens in the 68th minute when she one-timed a cross from Sinikka Salomaa (Tampere, Finland) for her team-high 13th goal of the season. The NE-10's leading scorer now has 32 points in 10 games.

Kirby got an insurance marker in the 73rd minute when she swooped in to head in a rebound of a shot by Jenny Petronis (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) that hit the cross bar and eluded the grasp of McCuin.

Franklin Pierce goalkeeperKim Higgins (Rochester, N.H.) did not have to make a save to record her fourth shutout of the year.

The Ravens are back home Saturday to host New Hampshire College in a 1 o'clock game that kicks off a Homecoming Day double-header. Franklin Pierce and N.H. College meet on the men's side at 3 p.m.

The Purple Knights are also home Saturday, hosting the College of St. Rose at 1 p.m.
