Ravens Rally From Five Goal Hole, Drop Thrilling Contest in Overtime

RINDGE, N.H. (March 21, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team rallied from a 7-2 first half deficit, but eventually fell in overtime to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption College Tuesday afternoon on Sodexo Field. With the win, the Greyhounds even their record at 2-2 and 1-1 NE10 and the loss drops the Crimson and Grey to 2-2, 0-2 NE10.

Trailing 7-2 in the first half, the Ravens won numerous draw controls and drove down into the attacking zone consistently to score seven straight markers and more importantly knot the score at seven all with 2:56 left before the break. Assumption took the lead at the end of the half and eventually were victorious in overtime on a Sarah Reilly unassisted tally.

Junior midfielder Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) paced the Raven offensive attack with a team-best four goals to go along with one helper. Twin sister Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) chipped in three goals and one assist. Morgan Riley (Jamesville, N.Y.), Julia Miller (Westfield, Mass.) and defender Megan Schaeffer (Brookhaven, N.Y.) added the other Raven goals.

Assumption began the contest with a goal about two minutes in as Reilly set up Qunicy Wilkins for a marker. Briana Sweeney notched an unassisted tally a minute later as she completed a clear and put the ball into the back of the cage.

Assumption manufactured four consecutive scores which increased their lead to 5-1 until Briana Sweeney answered with a filthy spin move off a Greyhound defender and rifled a shot from the left wing to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Reilly and teammate Amanda Burns pushed the advantage to 7-2 as the Ravens began to mount their comeback. At the 10:51 mark, Caitlin Sweeney powered through the teeth of the Greyhound defense and sniped in a shot from the left side to make it a 7-3 game. Briana Sweeney then scored the next two ginos off a free position attempt and a drive past some defenders to move the Ravens closer at 7-5.

With 6:21 left before the intermission, Schaeffer connected on a free position shot and Caitlin Sweeney went coast to coast off a successful clear through the middle of the field and fired a wide open shot home to tie the game.

In the second stanza, FPU regained the slim lead as Caitlin Sweeney completed a free position throw from the right wing and Briana Sweeney assisted on Miller's catch and shoot shot at the top of the crease to move ahead 9-8 with 20:39 left.

The back and forth affair continued as Miller made a free position goal with no one in front of her to tie up the score once again. With the game tied, Caitlin Sweeney found Morgan Riley standing on the close right wing and the duo teamed up for a catch and shoot marker to regain the lead to the home side.

Reilly brought the game back to a deadlock with a top shelf conversion at the 9:12 mark. There were numerous game-winning goal chances over the final minutes of regulation, most notably two chances by Assumption with nine ticks left, both went wide of the cage as the game headed into overtime.

The Ravens won the opening draw control and set up shop in the Greyhound defensive area. The team shared the rock between teammates until an open chance at the game winner came, but the ball fell out of the players stick. Greyhound goalkeeper Jaclyn Chirco scooped up the loose ball and AC successfully completed a clear. Reilly received a pass from behind the next, drove to her right and spun a shot into the net which concluded the overtime period.

Reilly racked up four goals and a game-best two assists in the win and Amanda Burns tallied a hat-trick (three goals). Raven netminder Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) stopped six shots in the setback and Chirco made 11 saves in the victory.

The Ravens remain at home for their next contest, an NE10 duel versus Saint Anselm at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
