Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Regular-Season Finale at No. 1 Le Moyne, 17-6, but Still Clinch Postseason Berth

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (April 15, 2017) – Senior midfielder Vicki Graveline (3-1-4) and senior attack Alexis Garbarino (3-0-3) scored three goals each on Saturday, to lead the way for No. 1 nationally ranked Le Moyne, as the Dolphins dealt a 17-6 loss to the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Field. The contest marked the end of the regular season for both squads.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 7-8 (5-8 NE10), while Le Moyne improves to 16-0 (13-0 NE10).

Despite the loss, Franklin Pierce qualified for the Northeast-10 Championship as the eighth and final seed, as a result of Saint Anselm's 19-2 loss to No. 3 Adelphi on Saturday. It is the first postseason berth for the Ravens since 2009, and is just the third trip to the Northeast-10 Championship in program history (2003). The prize for Franklin Pierce is a trip back to top seed Le Moyne on Wednesday, May 3, for the quarterfinal round. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Ted Grant Field.

On Saturday, Le Moyne poured in the game's first seven goals over the opening 8:16, to build a lead it would never come close to relinquishing. Graveline scored twice in the game-opening run, while sophomore attack Bryanna Fazio notched a goal and an assist.

Franklin Pierce got a pair of first-half goals from junior midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.), both on free-position shots, but was ultimately outscored 13-2 in the opening stanza.

Things leveled out in the second half, as Le Moyne eased off the accelerator. The two teams traded four second-half goals each to create the 17-6 final. Franklin Pierce had four different goal-scorers in the second half, while Garbarino struck twice for Le Moyne.

Sweeney's two goals made her the only multiple-point scorer of the afternoon for Franklin Pierce. Four other Ravens scored one goal each: freshman attack Morgan Riley (Jamesville, N.Y.), junior attack Anna Wilbert (Bohemia, N.Y.), junior midfielder Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) and senior defender Leana Richards (Queensbury, N.Y.). Caitlin Sweeney and senior defender Kenady Kelly (Plymouth, N.H.) collected three ground balls each for Franklin Pierce, while Kelly and senior attack Taylor Wilkinson (Wallingford, Conn.) caused two turnovers each.

For Le Moyne, in addition to Graveline and Garbarino, Fazio added three points as well (1-2-3). Junior defender Kelly Gaffney picked up a game-best five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Le Moyne won 19 of the game's 22 draw controls.

In net, senior Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) made 13 saves against 30 shots on goal and suffered the loss (7-8) for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the field, freshman Hannah George (16-0) made five stops against 11 shots to pick up the win for Le Moyne.
