Women’s Lacrosse Downed at Pace, 16-11

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (April 23, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team stepped ahead early in the first half, but the Pace Setters caught up and took a three-goal lead heading into halftime. The Setters able to steadily score in the second half, and the Ravens were not able to catch up, as they ultimately fell, 16-11, in Saturday afternoon's Northeast-10 Conference game at Pace Stadium.

With the loss, the Ravens record falls to 8-6 overall and 5-6 in conference play, while the Setters advance their record to 9-5 overall and 6-5 in the NE-10.

The Ravens took a 4-1 lead over the first 12 minutes, with sophomore Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) scoring first and senior attack Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) following up with back-to-back tallies for a 3-0 run.

The Setters were able to slip in a goal, but sophomore Brianna Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) answered right back for Franklin Pierce, to make it 4-1. It was a back-and-forth game from there, as it was tied three times, before Pace went off for three straight goals to end the first half with the lead, 9-6.

Pace started the second half with a free-position goal and followed it up with another goal right off the draw control to increase their lead to five goals, 11-6.

Caitlin Sweeney answered for the Ravens, but the Setters fired back with two more goals.

Sophomore attack Anna Wilbert (Bohemia, N.Y.) attempted to cut into the deficit for the Ravens, but again, Pace was able to get down to their offensive zone and put two more past junior keeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.), for a 14-8 lead.

Beville and Brianna Sweeney connected to try to spark a late comeback for the Ravens, but time expired and the Ravens fell, 16-11.

Leading the Ravens on Saturday was Beville with four goals, while Caitlin Sweeney added three and Brianna Sweeney and Wilbert each notched two goals. The Ravens totaled 23 shots, including 14 on net, collected 16 ground balls and caused six turnovers.

The losing keeper was Hunt, whose record is now 8-6, as she faced a barrage of 35 shots on goal and made 19 saves.

The Setters were led by sophomore attack Abby Haimson, with four goals. They totaled 42 shots, including 35 on net, collected 13 ground balls and won 26 draw controls.

The winning keeper was sophomore Alissa Silvestri, whose record advances to 9-5. She face 14 shots and made three saves.

The Ravens play again on Wednesday, April 27, at Adelphi, with a 6 p.m. start for a Northeast-10 Conference match.
