Beville’s Five Points Help Women’s Lacrosse to 14-10 Win Over AIC

RINDGE, N.H. (April 13, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team was able to take an early lead against American International, but the Yellow Jackets came back with six straight goals to take the lead going into halftime. Senior midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) eventually scored the game-winner for the Ravens in the second half of a 14-10 win at Sodexo Field on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Ravens advance their record to 7-4 overall and 4-4 in Northeast-10 Conference. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets fall to 7-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Sophomore midfielder Brianna Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) started the scoring for the Ravens, though her efforts were met by two AIC goals off of free-positions, as the Yellow Jackets took the lead, 2-1, early in the first half.

Beville had back-to-back goals to regain the lead for the Ravens. She then picked up a ground ball in the defensive zone and hustled her way down the field, ultimately setting up senior attack Nicole Beliveau (Westfield, Mass.), who put the ball away to make it 4-2, Franklin Pierce.

The Ravens continued the scoring trend with another Sweeney goal, this one a bounce shot off a free-position, to settle into a 7-2 lead with 12 minutes left in the half.

The Ravens would run out of luck from there for the time being, as the Yellow jackets came back with a vengeance, scoring five straight free-position shots to tie the game, 7-7. Junior attack Riley Brennan put AIC ahead with 45 seconds to go, and the Ravens entered halftime down by one, 8-7.

The second half started with Sweeney scoring an equalizing goal in the first 30 seconds, while the Ravens were down a man, evening the score at 8-8.

Beville was then fed the ball right in front of the cage and put it away in midair, in the midst of a run of six straight Franklin Pierce goals, which put the crimson and grey back on top, 10-8.

The final goal for the Ravens was an unassisted tally from Beville with 3:32 to play to put the icing on what would finish as a 14-10 victory.

The winning goalkeeper on Wednesday evening was Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.), who faced 20 shots on goal and made 10 saves. She extended her record to 7-4 on the season. American International junior goalkeeper Alexis Torosian faced 24 shots and made 11 saves, with her record falling to 7-5.

Leading the Ravens on Wednesday was Brianna Sweeney and Beville with four goals apiece, while sophomore Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) contributed a hat trick. Brianna Sweeney also collected 10 ground balls, while the team totaled 39 shots, collected 16 ground balls and won 13 draw controls.

The Yellow Jackets were carried by senior midfielder Cheyenne Carden, who had six goals and three ground balls. She also collected six of the team's 13 draw-control wins. As a team, AIC totaled 24 shots and collected nine ground balls.

The Ravens return to action at home, on Saturday, April 16, when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University in a 6:30 p.m. NE-10 contest.
