First Half Sinks Women’s Lacrosse in 15-5 Loss at No. 10 New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (April 2, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team fell behind early to a Chargers first half run, and could not come back on Saturday afternoon, as the Ravens fell to No. 10 nationally ranked New Haven, 15-5, in a Northeast-10 conference match on Kayo Field.

With the loss, the Ravens now have an overall record of 5-2, and 2-3 in conference. New Haven extends their win streak to five games for an overall record of 7-2, including 5-0 in conference play.

As the game began, the Chargers scored the first seven goals of the afternoon, including three strikes from sophomore attack Jessica Mazliah. Their run was broken by sophomore midfielder Brianna Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) midway through the first half.

New Haven continued to pour in four more goals before the half expired, including another goal and an assist from Mazliah, to build an 11-1 lead going into the second half.

The Ravens got their first two goals of the second half early, as senior midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) and Sweeney struck back-to-back to cut the deficit to 12-3.

However, the Chargers would notch three more goals over the remainder of the half to snuff out any comeback attempts, as the Ravens went on to fall, 15-5.

Leading the Ravens on Saturday was Sweeney with three goals and both Bellville and senior attack Nicole Beliveau (Westfield, Mass.) with one each. The Ravens totaled 17 shot attempts and 10 ground balls and caused four turnovers.

The Chargers were lead by Mazliah's five goals on the day. New Haven took 27 shots and collected 11 ground balls.

The winning goalie was New Haven senior Alyssa Gianotti, who made three saves in the first half to advance her record to 3-1. Ravens sophomore keeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) took the loss, falling to a record of 5-3, with nine saves on the day.

The Ravens play next on Tuesday, April 5, when they play host to Merrimack at 3:30 p.m. on Sodexo Field.
