Women’s Lacrosse Uses Late Comeback to Collect 12-11 (OT) Win Against Saint Michael’s

RINDGE, N.H (March 30, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team was on the short side of a halftime deficit on Wednesday afternoon against Saint Michael's but, after a comeback, sophomore Brianna Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) came up with the overtime, game-winning goal in the Northeast-10 conference game at Sodexo Field, as the Ravens came away 12-11 winners.

With the win, Franklin Pierce advances to 5-2 overall, and 2-2 in conference play, while the Purple Knights fall to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Sophomore goalie Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) furthered her record to 5-2 with the win for Franklin Pierce after facing a total of 16 shots on goal and making five saves. The Saint Michael's keeper, junior Grace Gunning, took the loss and fell to 2-6 while facing 24 shots and making 12 saves.

Eight of Gunning's save came in the first half, as the Purple Knights shrugged off a 21-8 disadvantage in shot attempts to take a 6-4 halftime lead. Freshman attack Ellie Clark pushed Saint Michael's out to a 3-1 in the first 10 minutes of the game.

The Sweeney sisters were able to cut into the deficit, with sophomore midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) scoring off a free-position shot, and Brianna Sweeney scoring the final goal of the half with just over a minute to go, off another free-position, to cut the deficit to two goals heading into the second half.

The Ravens got the first two goals of the second half, as senior midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) and Brianna Sweeney connected for the two goals. Sweeney came out from behind the cage on the equalizing goal, making it a 6-6 game.

Purple Knights sophomore attack Emily Byrne followed with back-to-back goals to regain the lead for Saint Michael's, 8-6. Caitlin and Brianna Sweeney connected for two more Raven goals, with Brianna tying the game again off a bounce shot, making it 8-8.

Saint Michael's scored three goals in a row to leave the Ravens behind again, 11-8. Caitlin Sweeney followed with a goal and Brianna Sweeney scored two more goals, to tie the game and send the Ravens into overtime with the game tied, 11-11.

Just under 90 seconds into overtime, Gunning stepped out of bounds on a clear attempt, resulting in a turnover. Gunning was unable to make it back to the net in time to save the ball from yet another Brianna Sweeney goal, this one to win the game for the Ravens, 12-11.
