Second-Half Onslaught Leads Women’s Lacrosse Past Assumption, 15-10

WORCESTER, Mass. (March 23, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team took an early lead, but fell behind in the first half of Wednesday's Northeast-10 Conference game at Assumption College. Then, after trailing at the half, the Ravens scored 10 consecutive goals in the second half to surge back and take the win, 15-10.

With the win, the Ravens advance to 4-1 on their season, including 1-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Assumption Greyhounds fall to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in Conference play.

The Ravens took an early 3-1 lead over the first five minutes, with sophomore midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) topping off the early run.

The Greyhounds looked for a comeback from there and found their equalizer with 12:05 to go in the first half, from freshman attack Kailyn Hart to force a 4-4 tie. Assumption tallied three more goals, with freshman attack Sarah Riley scoring the final two goals and setting her team up for a 7-4 lead going into the second half.

As the second half got underway, the Ravens were able to re-tie the game, as senior midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) put away a free-position shot for a score of 7-7 at the 23-minute mark.

Franklin Pierce went on to score seven more unanswered goals, to push the lead to 14-7 with under five minutes to go. Sophomore midfielder Brianna Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) scored four times on the Ravens' 10-goal run.

The Greyhounds' final two goals came from senior attack Molly Brown, including a free-position goal, but were unable to recover from the 10-goal surge and fell to the Ravens, 15-10.

Leading the Ravens on Wednesday was Brianna Sweeney with six goals, while Caitlin Sweeney collected four ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Junior goalkeeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) is now 4-1 overall after her win, as she faced 28 shots and saved 18.

For Assumption, Hart led the way with four points on three goals and an assist. Sophomore defender Meghan Cushing collected a team-high four ground balls.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, March 26, at Saint Anselm for a 1 p.m. start.
