Seventeen goal effort aids Women’s Lacrosse in commanding win over AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 21, 2015) – Junior Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) scored five goals on 10 shots as the Franklin Pierce University Ravens Women's Lacrosse team scored 17 goals on 51 shots in a 17-14 win against the American International College Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 4-1 overall (2-1 Northeast-10) while AIC falls to 3-5 (0-4 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce opened up the scoring just 33 seconds into the game on a goal by freshman Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead. The Ravens would strike again just over a minute later with Beville notching her first goal of the game.

Kelly Reilly would strike off a free position shot for AIC at the 22:59 mark in the first half, until Franklin Pierce would run off a streak of three goals in a row courtesy of Briana Sweeney, sister Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.), and Anna Wilbert (Boehemia, N.Y.). Those goals would highlight the first half, as the Ravens would hold a 10-6 lead going into halftime.

The second half would see much of the same scoring frenzy from both sides, as both teams seemed to just trade goals throughout the duration of the match. The Ravens would open up a five goal lead with 16:06 remaining on Beville's fifth and final goal of the game. AIC would respond with a three-goal streak of their own to bring the game back within two goals, but that would be as close as they would get.

Behind Beville's effort could be Caitlin Sweeney collecting four goals and an assist, while Briana Sweeney would just about equal her sibling's stats with three goals and an assist of her own. Seniors Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) and Julia Smiley (Saunderstown, R.I.) would each toss in two goals as well in the win. Goalkeeper Denise Hunt would add the W to her record, improving to 4-1 this season in net.

For American International, Reilly would lead the way with five goals, while Jessica Lawler also played solid tossing in three goals and an assist. Abigail Cavallo and Cheyenne Carden each scored two goals apiece as well for the Yellow Jackets. Goalkeeper Alexis Torosian would take the loss in net, dropping her record to 3-5 on the season.

The Ravens return to action this Wednesday, March 25 when they take on Assumption at home beginning at 3 p.m.
