Women’s Lacrosse Fills Up Net in Second Half, Downs Pace, 21-8

Four Ravens with five or more points

Wilbert Wilbert scored four consecutive goals early in the second half.

RINDGE, N.H. (April 18, 2015) – Freshman attack Anna Wilbert (Bohemia, N.Y.) poured in a season-best six goals on Saturday afternoon, while junior attack Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) added three goals and three assists, as the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team used 14 second-half goals to roll to a 21-8 win over Pace in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Freshmen midfielders Angela Kelly and Casey Gelderman scored twice each in defeat for Pace.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 7-6 (5-6 Northeast-10), while Pace falls to 4-10 (2-9 Northeast-10). Pace is in its inaugural women's lacrosse season, and Saturday's meeting was the first ever contest between the two teams.

Holding on to just a 7-6 lead at halftime, Franklin Pierce blew the doors off the game in the second half. Senior midfielder Amanda Gauvin (Ashburnham, Mass.) started the second half with authority, as she slammed home a high feed from freshman midfielder Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) from out in front of the cage, just 84 seconds into the second stanza. The other Sweeney twin, freshman midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.), made it a three-goal game 2:37 into the half, with her team-leading 30th goal of the campaign.

Pace briefly cut the lead to two goals again, at 9-7, on Kelly's 20th goal of the season, on a free-position shot with 26:20 to play. From there, it was all Ravens, has Franklin Pierce rattled off the next 12 goals of the game over the next 20:08, to jump to a 21-7 lead. Wilbert scored five of her six goals during the long second-half run, including four consecutive goals from 23:57 to 20:01, a span of just 3:56. Caitlin Sweeney dished out a pair of second-half assists, while the Ravens capitalized on four free-position shots in the second half, including the second goal of the season for junior attack Sherra Dowling (Leominster, Mass.).

The sisters Sweeney combined for 12 draw controls, to help Franklin pierce maintain possession throughout the day on Saturday, as Caitlin corralled seven and Briana collected five. It was a balanced defensive effort for the Ravens, as junior attack Nicole Dale (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), Beville, sophomore defender Leana Richards (Queensbury, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Megan Raposa (Tiverton, R.I.) all picked up two ground balls each.

For Pace, Kelly and freshman midfielder Najmah James each picked up a pair of draw controls. Freshman midfielder Stephanie Chadnick led the team with four ground balls, while Kelly added three more.

Sophomore goalkeeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) played the first 48:30 in goal for Franklin Pierce and finished with six saves against 13 shots to pick up the win (6-5). Senior Julia Coakley (Bridgewater, Mass.) logged the remaining 11:30 and made three saves against four shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Alissa Silvestri minded the crease for the first 38:51 for Pace, made 10 saves against 25 shots and took the loss (4-9). Over the remaining 21:09, freshman Jillian Cross stopped two of eight shots.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, April 22, when they remain home to host Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
