Shopshire Has Career Day, Women’s Lacrosse Edged by Le Moyne in Season Finale, 13-10

RINDGE, N.H. (April 26, 2014) – Junior attack Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) matched her career high with six goals on Saturday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 decision to No. 8 nationally ranked Le Moyne in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Senior attack Kathleen Conese led all players with seven points on six goals and an assist to lead Le Moyne in the victory.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce concludes its 2014 campaign at 4-10 (3-9 Northeast-10), while Le Moyne heads into the Northeast-10 Championship at 12-4 (9-3 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring on Saturday afternoon, as junior midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) scored the first of her two goals 3:11 into the proceedings. Beville would be the only other multiple-goal scorer of the day for the Ravens behind Shopshire.

Le Moyne replied with an early first-half surge, as the Dolphins poured in four straight goals over a span of 6:27 to jump out front, 4-1. Conese netted her first goal of the day 6:48 into the game, while junior attack Catie McKay added a free-position goal. Franklin Pierce scored four of the next six goals heading into the latter stages of the half, including Shopshire's first three scores of the afternoon, to cut the gap to 6-5 with 6:54 to play before halftime. Le Moyne would rattle off the final three goals of the stanza, with Conese scoring twice and assisting on the other, to take a 9-5 lead into the intermission.

Franklin Pierce refused to go quietly in the second half, as the Ravens scored the period's first three goals over the opening 8:18 to cut the gap back to one goal, at 9-8. Junior attack Megan Raposa (Tiverton, R.I.) scored her only goal of the afternoon, while Shopshire added two more, including a free-position shot with 21:42 to play.

Le Moyne picked up goals just 76 seconds apart from sophomore sisters Maggie and Claire Monnat to grow the lead back to three, at 11-8. Franklin Pierce again cut the gap to one, this time at 11-10, as sophomore attack Nicole Beliveau (Westfield, Mass.) and Shopshire netted goals just 23 seconds apart.

Conese struck 4:02 after the final Shopshire goal to reclaim a two-goal lead for Le Moyne, which then began to bleed the clock on offense with less than 10 minutes to play. Conese capped the day for the Dolphins with 5:11 remaining to create the 13-10 final.

Junior midfielder Julia Smiley (Saunderstown, R.I.) led the defensive effort for Franklin Pierce, as she caused a game-high four turnovers and scooped up four ground balls as well. Shopshire and junior midfielder Amanda Gauvin (Ashburnham, Mass.) caused three turnovers each for the Ravens, with the former adding four ground balls and the latter not committing a turnover of her own on the afternoon. Senior midfielder Victoria Nies corralled a game-best five draw controls for Le Moyne.

Junior goalkeeper Julia Coakley (Bridgewater, Mass.) made seven saves against 20 shots on goal and took the loss (4-10) in net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the field, junior Molly Marbut made eight saves against 18 shots to pick up the win (5-1) between the pipes for Le Moyne.
