Ravens to host Stonehill Tuesday

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (March 22, 2014) – Junior attack Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) scored twice on Saturday afternoon to push her team-leading total to 13 goals on the season, but the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team suffered a 22-3 loss at the hands of No. 2 nationally ranked Adelphi in Northeast-10 Conference play at Motamed Field. Senior attack Devan Crimi piled up nine points on four goals and five assists to lead the way for Adelphi.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-3 (1-2 Northeast-10), while Adelphi improves to 7-0 (3-0 Northeast-10).

Adelphi scored the first five goals of the game over the opening 6:13 and never looked back, including two scores from sophomore attack Rachel O'Brien, as well as a goal and an assist each from junior midfielders Alexa Froccaro and Danielle Jaycox. Shopshire got the Ravens on the board 9:10 into the contest, but it would be all Adelphi from there through the remainder of the half.

The Panthers rattled off the final eight goals of the half to take a 13-1 lead into the intermission. Adelphi made it a 12-0 run by also putting home the first four goals of the second half to balloon the lead to 17-1. Crimi had three of her four goals and also dished out three of her five assists to figure in on six of the 12 goals in the run. Jaycox picked up another goal and an assist, while Froccaro scored her second goal, as both were en route to five-point days on three goals and two assists.

Junior attack Megan Raposa (Tiverton, R.I.) finally broke up the run with a free-position goal with 19:23 to play, before Adelphi tacked on five more goals to push the lead as high as 22-2. Shopshire put home a free-position shot with 31 seconds to play to create the 22-3 final.

Adelphi enjoyed a 49-9 advantage in shot attempts on the day, as the Panthers enjoyed a consistent advantage in possession, courtesy of a 21-5 edge in draw controls and 28 Franklin Pierce turnovers. For its part, the Franklin Pierce defense forced Adelphi into 16 turnovers of its own.

Junior goalkeeper Julia Coakley (Bridgewater, Mass.) started in net for Franklin Pierce and logged 36:11 over two stints between the pipes. She finished with nine saves against 22 shots on goal and took the loss (2-3). Over the remaining 23:49, freshman Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) made five saves against 14 shots on goal in her collegiate debut.

Sophomore Taylor Hayes started in the crease for Adelphi and made two saves against four shots on goal over the first 43:57 to pick up the win (7-0). In relief, sophomore Taylor Langston stopped the only shot on goal against her cage over 10:46, while senior Jordann Dempsey turned aside one shot and allowed one goal over 5:17.

The Ravens are currently scheduled to return to the field on Tuesday, March 25, when they return home to host Stonehill in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
