Ravens to host Merrimack March 19

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (March 13, 2014) – Junior midfielder Kathryn Campbell had five points on three goals and two assists on Thursday afternoon to lead New Haven to a 14-3 victory over the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Kayo Field. Junior attack Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) scored twice in defeat for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-2 (0-1 Northeast-10), while New Haven improves to 3-0 (2-0 Northeast-10).

New Haven scored the first 10 goals of the game over the first 22:13 and never looked back. Campbell had all three of her goals in the first-half run, while freshman midfielder Nicole Belanger added three of her four goals on the day. Shopshire finally got the Ravens on the board with 3:32 to play in the first half, before senior attack Nicole McKee picked up one more for the Chargers to give New Haven an 11-1 lead heading into the intermission.

New Haven continued to control things in the second half, though the offense slowed on the frigid Connecticut afternoon. The Chargers scored the first three goals of the second half, to push the lead as high as 14-1 on a goal from sophomore midfielder Corinne Fisher with 14:36 to play. Franklin Pierce got a goal from sophomore attack Nicole Dale (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and another from Shopshire in the final seven minutes to create the 14-3 final.

New Haven piled up a 26-15 advantage in shot attempts, which came partially as a result of a 15-4 edge in draw controls. The Chargers also capitalized on their free-position opportunities, piling up nine shot attempts resulting in four goals. Meanwhile, Franklin Pierce was able to release only one free-position shot attempt, which came up empty.

Junior goalkeeper Julia Coakley (Bridgewater, Mass.) took the loss (1-2) after she started in goal for Franklin Pierce, made two saves against 12 shots on goal and was lifted after 22:13, after the 10th New Haven goal. Senior Jacqueline Jolles (Hamden, Conn.) made four saves against eight shots on goal over the remaining 37:47.

At the other end of the field, sophomore Alyssa Gianotti started, played the first 45:25, made five saves against six shots on goal and picked up the win (3-0) in net for New Haven. Sophomore Marissa McDermott made one save against three shots on goal over the final 14:35.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, March 19, when they return home to host Merrimack in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
