Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Saint Anselm, 14-6

Raposa corrals five ground balls, Beville collects five draw controls

RINDGE, N.H. (April 3, 2013) – Sophomore attacker Marissa Daly piled up eight points on six goals and two assists on Wednesday night to lead Saint Anselm to a 14-6 win over the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Sophomore midfielder Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) and freshman defender Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) scored twice each in the loss for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-4 (1-3 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm improves to 7-1 (4-0 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce struck first in the contest, 4:04 into the proceedings, when sophomore attacker Megan Raposa (Tiverton, R.I.) put home her second of the season. The Ravens would also lead at 2-1 on the 14th of the season for Shopshire at the 12:05 mark, before Saint Anselm took the lead for good.

The Hawks scored the next three goals, including two from sophomore midfielder Sarah Doherty and the team-leading 32nd of the season for Daly. Freshman attacker Nicole Dale (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) stopped the bleeding briefly for Franklin Pierce with 4:13 to play in the first half on her 11th of the season to cut the lead to one goal at 4-3.

From there, Saint Anselm seized control of the game by scoring the final two goals of the first half and the first seven of the second half for a 9-0 run spanning 24:34 of game time. Daly struck for the remaining five of her goals during the run, while sophomore midfielder Kelly Pickett added a pair and sophomore attacker Kaitlyn Stazinski chipped in a goal and two assists.

In the final nine minutes, Beville scored twice for Franklin Pierce -- her third and fourth on the season -- while Shopshire added her second of the afternoon. Meanwhile, Stazinski contributed another goal for Saint Anselm to create the 14-6 final.

Junior goalkeeper Jacqueline Jolles (Hamden, Conn.) made 12 saves against 26 shots on goal and took the loss (2-3) in net for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Jane Bunn stopped eight of the 14 on-target shots at her end of the field to earn the win (3-1) for Saint Anselm.

Saint Anselm held a 35-24 advantage in shot attempts and a 12-9 edge in draw controls in the game, while Franklin Pierce held a 22-18 advantage in ground balls. Franklin Pierce was successful on 10 of its 19 clear attempts (52.6%) and converted on one of five free-position shots (20%). Saint Anselm went 14-for-17 on clears (82.4%) and 3-for-10 on free-position attempts (30%).

The Ravens return to the field on Friday, April 5, when they remain home to host Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
