Leach causes six turnovers, corrals seven ground balls

Shopshire Shopshire was one of three Ravens with four or more goals in Saturday's win at SCSU.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 30, 2013) – Sophomore attacker Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) scored a game-high six goals, picked up six ground balls and two draw controls, and caused four turnovers on Saturday afternoon, to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team to an 18-9 win over Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference play on the road at Jess Dow Field. Junior midfielder Sarah Cebry scored three times for SCSU in defeat.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-3 (1-2 Northeast-10), while Southern Connecticut State falls to 1-6 (0-5 Northeast-10).

The Ravens had the offense firing on all cylinders, as Shopshire led the way with her six scores. She was joined by freshman attacker Nicole Dale (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), who had five goals, and senior midfielder Ashley Lamagdeleine (Westfield, Mass.), who tallied five points on four goals and an assist. On the defensive side of things, Shopshire and senior midfielder Lindsey Leach (Hamden, Conn.) were a continual nuisance through the midfield, with the latter setting the tone by chalking up seven ground balls and six caused turnovers.

Dale opened the scoring for Franklin Pierce 4:14 into the contest, before SCSU answered with quick scores from Cebry and sophomore attacker Emily Orser to take a 2-1 lead at the 5:32 mark. The Ravens took control of the game over the remainder of the half, scoring eight of the 10 goals before the intermission to take a 9-4 lead into halftime. Shopshire and Lamagdeleine alternated scores in a 4:10 span starting a few minutes after the Orser goal in a quick 4-0 spurt for Franklin Pierce, with the latter converting on a free-position shot.

Cebry and senior midfielder Jessica Shaw scored for the Owls on either side of the midpoint of the first half to pull SCSU within a goal at 5-4, but then the Ravens rattled off the final four scores of the stanza. Shopshire scored twice more, while Lamagdeleine picked up a goal and an assist.

It was more of the same in the second half, as the Ravens held a 9-5 advantage in the period on the way to the 18-9 win. Dale poured in four of her five markers in the second half, including the lone man-up goal of the contest. Lamagdeleine rounded out her afternoon with her second free-position goal of the day; she was the only Raven to convert on a set piece on the afternoon. Senior midfielder Courtney Weber (Centerport, N.Y.) added a second-half goal late in the frame to go with her first-half goal. Meanwhile, for SCSU, Cebry rounded out her scoring, Orser added a second goal, and sophomore attacker Sarah Muise scored twice in the second half.

Junior goalkeeper Jacqueline Jolles (Hamden, Conn.) made nine saves against 18 shots on goal to pick up the win (2-2) in net for Franklin Pierce. Sophomore Nora Anderson was peppered with 23 shots on goal at the other end of the field and made five saves while taking the loss (0-1).

Franklin Pierce held a 28-23 advantage in shot attempts, a 25-17 edge in ground balls, and a 16-13 advantage in draw controls in the game. Franklin Pierce was successful on 14 of its 17 clear attempts (82.4%) and converted on two of four free-position shots (50%). SCSU went 11-for-16 on clears (68.8%) and 1-for-6 on free-position attempts (16.7%).

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, April 3, when they return home to host Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
