Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 4 Adelphi, 18-1

Ravens travel to Stonehill on Tuesday

Shopshire Shopshire converted on a free-position chance against Adelphi on Saturday to score her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

RINDGE, N.H. (March 23, 2013) – Junior attacker Devan Crimi tallied eight points on six goals and two assists on Saturday afternoon to lead No. 4 nationally ranked Adelphi to an 18-1 win over the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Sophomore attacker Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) scored the lone goal in defeat for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-2 (0-1 Northeast-10), while Adelphi improves to 7-0 (4-0 Northeast-10).

Adelphi poured in six goals in the first 10 minutes as part of an 11-0 run over the game's first 20:08. Crimi scored five of her six goals in the run, and added an assist, while senior attacker Sara Sangiorgio put home two goals as well. By the end of the day, four Adelphi players would score at least four points: Crimi (6-2-8), sophomore midfielder Alexa Froccaro (3-2-5), Sangiorgio (4-0-4) and junior midfielder Melyssa Mathewson (0-4-0).

Shopshire got Franklin Pierce on the board with 3:10 to play before the intermission, with what would prove to be the team's only goal of the day. She put home a free-position chance for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Adelphi tacked on seven more second-half goals to create the 18-1 final. Crimi capped her day with a goal and an assist in the second frame. Meanwhile, Sangiorgio scored twice more, while Froccaro added a goal and an assist and Mathewson dished out two helpers.

Junior goalkeeper Jacqueline Jolles (Hamden, Conn.) got the start and had her first double-digit save outing of the season. She stopped 17 of the 33 shots on goal at her end of the field, but was stuck with the loss (1-1). At the other end, Adelphi junior Jordann Dempsey made five saves against six shots on goal to pick up the win (5-0).

Adelphi held a 44-8 advantage in shot attempts, a 25-6 edge in ground balls, and an 11-10 advantage in draw controls in the game. Franklin Pierce was successful on six of its 16 clear attempts (37.5%) and converted on one of three free-position shots (33.3%). Adelphi went 17-for-18 on clears (94.4%) and 0-for-5 on free-position attempts.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, March 26, when they travel to Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass.
