Women’s Ice Hockey Breezes Past Buffalo State, 5-2

Haley Parker

BUFFALO, N.Y. (December 7, 2018) – A four-goal second period proved to be more than enough for the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team on Friday afternoon, as the Ravens opened up a 5-0 lead and ultimately cruised to a 5-2 win on the road at Buffalo State. Sophomore forward Ann Margaret DiSciscio (Litchfield, N.H.) scored twice – for her first multiple-goal as a Raven – and added an assist to match her career high with three points, in the non-conference win at Buffalo State Ice Arena.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 8-6-0, while Buffalo State falls to 3-5-2. The two teams will meet again on Saturday to wrap up the semester. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at Buffalo State Ice Arena.

The Ravens took the lead for good just 4:17 into the proceedings. Junior defenseman Delaney Guimont (Bedford, N.H.) cashed in her third goal of the season, off of assists from sophomore forwards Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) and Marissa Massaro (Brockton, Mass.).

Franklin Pierce then asserted control of the game by potting four goals in the second period to balloon the lead to 5-0. First, it was a pair of special-teams tallies. Sophomore forward Nicole Amato (Billerica, Mass.) struck for her team-leading 10th goal of the season, shorthanded, at the 4:43 mark, while DiSciscio provided the lone assist. At 12:23, it was DiSciscio's turn, with a power-play marker for her third goal of the campaign. Junior defenseman Katie Neuburger (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and freshman forward Kiki Doucette (Bridgewater, Mass.) picked up the assists on the eventual game-winning goal.

DiSciscio followed with her second of the contest less than five minutes later, at 17:19, off of a helper from Amato. It marked the third career multiple-goal game for DiSciscio, as she had two such outings as a freshman at Post a year ago. Just 86 seconds later, at 18:45, Parker capped her two-point day with Franklin Pierce's final goal of the afternoon. Junior defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.) provided the lone assist, in front of her hometown crowd, on Parker's eighth of the year.

Buffalo State put home a pair of power-play goals in the third period to create the 5-2 final. Just 34 seconds into the frame, it was the fourth of the season for junior forward Lila Toczek, off of assists from sophomore forward Olivia Smith and senior forward Emma Ruggiero. Finally, at 6:29, sophomore forward Kira Herkey provided the setup for the second goal of the year for junior defenseman Cheyenne Matson.

Freshman goaltender Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.) finished with 22 saves against 24 shots on goal to pick up the win (3-2-0) in front of the Franklin Pierce net. At the other of the ice, it was a 26-save outing, against 31 shots, in a losing effort for Buffalo State sophomore netminder Bri Gawronski (3-5-2).
