Women’s Ice Hockey Wraps Up Semester with 4-1 Win at Salem State

SALEM, Mass. (December 9, 2017) – For the second straight day, the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team piled up more than 45 shots, this time to the tune of a 50-14 advantage at Salem State. On Saturday afternoon, the resultant output came much more easily than it had on Friday night, as the Ravens rolled to a 4-1 win at Rockett Ice Arena. In all, 10 different Ravens notched at least one point, while freshman forward Nicole Amato (Billerica, Mass.) finished with a goal and an assist.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 7-6-1, ticks over .500 for the first time on the season, has won three in a row and is unbeaten in its last five (4-0-1) to close out the semester. Salem State fell to 1-7-2 with the loss.

While racking up a 22-4 advantage in shots in the first period, the Ravens were held off the scoreboard until the extremely late stages of the opening frame. Amato ultimately struck for her team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 19:50 mark to open the scoring. She had the quick finish from the slot, off of a feed from down low behind the net by sophomore defenseman Delaney Guimont (Bedford, N.H.).

Salem State evened things up on the other side of the intermission, just 83 seconds into the second stanza. Senior forward Courtney Smith scored her second goal of the year via a deflection in the slot, while sophomore forwards Kylie Currier and Julia Dares provided the assists, at 1:23.

The eventual game-winning goal for Franklin Pierce came less than three minutes later, at 4:14. Freshman forward Emily Kramer (Rockville, Md.) banged home her second goal of the season out front, as she finished off a centering feed from sophomore forward Alli Sugar (Canton, Conn.), while sophomore forward Kelsey Holmes (Warwick, R.I.) tacked on an assist as well.

Once again, the Ravens would score late in the period, as sophomore forward Meg Gilbride (Braintree, Mass.) notched her third goal of the campaign at the 19:44 mark. She stuffed home a wrap-around attempt, while senior forward Alex Brolsma (Bloomington, Minn.) and freshman forward Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) contributed assists on the play.

The Ravens had the only goal of the third period, as they put home an insurance marker at 17:59 to salt the game away. Freshman forward Marissa Massaro (Brockton, Mass.) had the finish amid a scramble out front for her fourth goal of the season, with Amato and fellow freshman forward Kelsey Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) providing the helpers.

Senior goaltender Madison Murray (Berkley, Mich.) finished with 13 saves against 14 shots to pick up the win (5-2-0) in the crease for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, sophomore netminder Sarah Plourde (0-3-1) piled up a career-high 46 saves against 50 shots in a losing effort for Salem State. It was her third 40-save outing on the season, in just her fourth start of the year.

The Ravens return to the ice on the other side of the semester break, when they host Johnson & Wales on Sunday, Jan. 7. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.
