Women’s Ice Hockey Comes Up Empty at Holy Cross, Falls 3-0, Snapping Winning Streak

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 22, 2016) – A first-period goal would be all Holy Cross needed to deal a defeat to the visiting Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team on Tuesday night at Hart Recreation Center. The Crusaders later added a pair of third-period insurance goals to post a 3-0 win over the Ravens in New England Hockey Conference play, snapping the latter's seven-game winning streak.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 7-2-0 (4-2-0 NEHC), while Holy Cross improves to 7-0-0 (5-0-0 NEHC).

Holy Cross struck for the eventual game-winning goal 12:49 into the proceedings on Tuesday night. Sophomore forward Sam Girard netted her seventh goal of the campaign, off of assists from senior forward Elizabeth Scala and sophomore defenseman Jackie Gellnar.

It would turn out to be the only goal the Crusaders would need on the night, as they rang up a 14-7 edge in shots on goal in the first period, en route to a 30-22 advantage over the course of the game. The second period would yield no goals, but Holy Cross would add a pair of insurance markers in the final frame.

First, at the 13:42 mark, junior forward Kara Violette matched Girard for the team lead with her seventh goal of the season, while Girard picked up the lone assist. Sophomore forward Julie Matthias would later round out the scoring with a shorthanded, empty-net tally at the 18:17 mark, off of helpers from junior forward Emily Lissner and junior goaltender Tessie Salatas.

Franklin Pierce senior goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished with 27 saves against 29 shots on goal and suffered the loss (6-2-0) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Salatas (5-0-0) stopped all 22 shots she faced to pick up the win and her first collegiate shutout in the crease for Holy Cross.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Dec. 2, when they return home to host Sacred Heart in a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.
