Ketterman Pair, O’Neil Shutout Lead Women’s Ice Hockey Past Southern Maine, 3-0

GORHAM, Maine (February 4, 2017) – Senior forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) bookended the scoring on Saturday afternoon, providing two-thirds of the day's offense at USM Ice Arena, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team posted a 3-0 road win over Southern Maine in New England Hockey Conference play. Senior goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) made 20 saves in net to earn her sixth shutout of the season.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 14-5-1 (10-4-0 NEHC), while Southern Maine falls to 6-13-1 (4-8-1 NEHC).

After a scoreless first period -- in which the Ravens outshot USM 19-5 -- the Ravens opened the scoring 2:39 into the second period, with a shorthanded tally. Freshman forward Kayla Trujillo (Pueblo, Colo.) sent a pass through the neutral zone to Ketterman, who had a step on the defense coming across the blue line and into the offensive end. Ketterman finished the breakaway with her 11th goal of the season by slipping the puck between the pads of Southern Maine sophomore goaltender Britney Evangelista.

Franklin Pierce doubled the lead to 2-0 before the intermission, with a goal at the 15:41 mark. Senior defenseman Katie Flynn (Sandwich, Mass.) had the puck at the right point and sent it over to freshman forward Meg Gilbride (Braintree, Mass.) at the top of the left circle. Gilbride took a shot through traffic, which was deflected by the defense and wound up in the back of the net for her seventh goal of the campaign. Senior forward Nina Danforth (Stratford, Conn.) added an assist on the play as well.

Ketterman -- who finished the weekend with 2-2-4 over two games -- capped the scoring at 5:33 of the third period to create the 3-0 final. Flynn had the initial shot on the play, which was turned aside by Evangelista, before Ketterman put away the rebound to post her third multiple-goal game of the season.

O'Neil (12-4-1) stopped all 20 shots she faced to pick up the win and post her 13th career shutout. Meanwhile, Evangelista (3-8-1) finished with 33 saves against 36 shots and suffered the loss in goal for Southern Maine.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Feb. 7, when they return home to host Post in a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 8 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.
