White Notches Senior-Night Shutout as Women’s Ice Hockey Blanks USM, 2-0

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 20, 2016) – On the program's first-ever Senior Night, a goal each in the second and third periods on Saturday night was enough for the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team, which notched a 2-0 win over Southern Maine in New England Hockey Conference play at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Junior goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) made 18 saves on the night to post the shutout.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 16-7-1 (10-7-0 NEHC), while Southern Maine falls to 3-20-2 (2-13-2 NEHC).

After a scoreless first period, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring just 76 seconds into the second period on Saturday night. Senior forward Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) was the first person to find the puck amid a goalmouth scramble and was able to jam home her 13th goal of the season. Senior defenseman Sarah Sheils (Pittsburgh, Pa.) provided the lone assist at the 1:16 mark.

The insurance marker for the Ravens would come at the 10:18 mark of the third period. One Southern Maine penalty had expired, and the officials were set to whistle another infraction in a delayed-penalty situation. With White on the bench for the extra attacker, the puck ultimately came to junior forward Lanie Matsumoto (Fort Collins, Colo.) amid traffic in the slot. Matsumoto put her fourth of the season home into the right side of the net, while senior defenseman Haylea Barbieri (Plainville, Mass.) notched the lone assist.

Though just a junior, White (8-3-0) was honored with the Ravens' senior class on Saturday night, as she is scheduled to graduate after just three years at Franklin Pierce. She was perfect on Senior Night, making saves on each of the 18 shots sent her way to post her 11th career shutout, as well as her fifth of the season.

At the other end of the ice, Southern Maine sophomore netminder Courtney Davis (1-7-0) was peppered with 36 shots and came up with 34 saves in her crease in the losing effort.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28, for the NEHC Open Tournament, which will be hosted by Saint Anselm at Sullivan Arena in Manchester, N.H. Game times and opponents are still to be determined.
