Ravens wrap up regular season Saturday vs. Southern Maine

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 19, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team turned up the pressure against Massachusetts Boston throughout the second and third periods on Friday night at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Ultimately, however, the Ravens could only beat Beacons sophomore goaltender Rachel Myette once on the night, as Franklin Pierce suffered a 2-1 loss in New England Hockey Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 15-7-1 (9-7-0 NEHC), while Massachusetts Boston improves to 13-11-0 (11-5-0 NEHC).

Each period featured just one goal on Friday night, with the Beacons firing the first salvo midway through the first period. Gathering the puck in front of the right post, senior forward Jenny Currie put a deke move on Franklin Pierce junior goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) and stuffed the puck inside the near post. Junior forward Kristen Embrey and senior forward Alexandra Karlis picked up the assists on Currie's 13th goal of the season at the 10:54 mark.

Franklin Pierce's answer would not come until the final minute of the second period, as the Ravens converted on a late power play. Senior forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) found room to walk out into the high slot from the right-wing side. She took a wrist shot against the grain and put it over the glove shoulder of Myette for her 15th goal of the campaign. Senior forward Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) and senior defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) had the assists at the 19:21 mark.

The Beacons would get the third period's only goal, and thus the game-winner, at the 6:46 mark of the final stanza. The play originally developed on a rush into the offensive end, with senior forward Kristina Bove taking the original shot from the right side. White made the pad save on Bove, but freshman forward Edy Moritz was the first to get to the rebound and quickly snapped it home from the bottom of the left circle. Embrey added her second assist of the night on Moritz's second goal of the year.

Franklin Pierce outshot the Beacons 12-3 in the third period -- and had outshot them 12-2 in the second frame as well -- and also had 1:47 of 5-on-3 time in the final five minutes, but could not find a second goal, as Massachusetts Boston escaped with the 2-1 win.

White (7-3-0) finished with 10 saves against 12 shots between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Myette (10-7-0) stopped 33 of the 34 shots she faced in the crease for Massachusetts Boston.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Feb. 20, when they remain home to host Southern Maine in the regular-season finale. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
