Defense Stifles Nichols, Women’s Ice Hockey Cruises to 5-0 Road Win

Brolsma (1-2-3) and Holmes (1-1-2) lead the way

HARRISVILLE, R.I. (January 16, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team's penalty killing unit was perfect again on Saturday afternoon, and added a pair of shorthanded goals for good measure at Levy Rink, as the Ravens rolled through Nichols, 5-0, in New England Hockey Conference play. The Ravens killed off all seven Nichols power plays on the day and are now a perfect 52-for-52 on the penalty kill on the season.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 12-2-1 (6-2-0 NEHC), has won five straight and is unbeaten in its last 10 (9-0-1), while Nichols falls to 2-13-0 (0-7-0 NEHC).

Franklin Pierce struck for the only goal it would need on Saturday at the 11:07 mark of the first period. Junior forward Alex Brolsma (Bloomington, Minn.) opened her three-point day (1-2-3) with her seventh goal of the season, and the eventual game-winner, off of assists from senior forward Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) and junior forward Michelle Holmes (Goffstown, N.H.). The first of the two shorthanded goals followed at 18:58, as senior forward Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) put away her seventh goal of the campaign, unassisted.

The Ravens scored twice more in the second period to double the lead to 4-0. Junior forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) got back in the goal-scoring column after a five-game drought, putting home her eighth of the year at the 4:36 mark, with Brolsma providing the lone assist. Brolsma also assisted at the 17:52 mark, when Holmes made it a two-point day (1-1-2) with her 10th goal of the year.

Another shorthanded tally, at the 12:44 mark of the third period, capped the day's scoring and created the 5-0 final. Junior goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) started the play the other way for the Ravens, and senior forward Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.) ultimately set up the fifth of the season, and second in as many days, for senior defenseman Sarah Sheils (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

White (6-0-0) stopped all 12 shots on her goal to notch her third straight shutout, as well as her fourth of the season and the 10th of her career. White has now not allowed a goal in her last 226:00 between the pipes. At the other end of the ice, sophomore Lindsay O'Connell (1-10-0) piled up 43 saves against 48 shots in the crease for Nichols.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they travel to Saint Anselm for a New England Hockey Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Sullivan Arena in Manchester, N.H.
