Second-Period Power Plays Propel Women’s Ice Hockey in 4-0 Win over Becker

Brolsma has fourth career two-goal game

WINCHENDON, Mass. (January 12, 2016) – Sophomore forward Alex Brolsma (Bloomington, Minn.) and senior forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) scored power-play goals just 65 seconds apart in the second period on Tuesday night, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team stretched a 1-0 first-intermission lead to a 3-0 margin by the time the second intermission rolled around. The Ravens tacked on another goal in the third to finish off the 4-0 win over Becker in non-conference play at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 10-2-1 and is unbeaten in its last eight (7-0-1), while Becker falls to 2-12-0. Franklin Pierce has now posted three straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in the last 209:39.

Franklin Pierce scored the first period's only goal to start things off on Tuesday night. Senior forward Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) worked the puck to senior defenseman Haylea Barbieri (Plainville, Mass.) at the point, and the latter wound and fired a slap shot from there. Brolsma got her stick to the puck en route and deflected home her fifth goal of the season at the 7:35 mark, her first of two goals on the night.

Brolsma struck again, on the power play at 13:27 of the second, to double the lead to 2-0. This time, she sniped the top-right corner of the net from the bottom of the right-wing circle, off of a cross-ice feed from junior forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska), while senior defenseman Sarah Sheils (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added an assist as well.

Baker followed with another power-play marker just 65 seconds later, at the 14:32 mark. She finished off her ninth of the season, tying for the team lead, from just outside the crease on the left-wing side, while junior forward Alysha Raimo (Fitchburg, Mass.) and senior defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) picked up the helpers.

The game's final goal game less than a minute into the final period, as senior forward Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play with a backhander from the bottom of the right circle just 51 seconds into the third stanza. Baker started the scoring play, as she dangled her way into the high slot before laying the puck off for Raimo. Raimo quickly dished it off to Doucette, who put away her sixth goal of the campaign.

Franklin Pierce dominated play throughout on Tuesday night, which meant junior goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) needed to make only six saves to post the shutout and up her record to 5-0-0. It was her second consecutive shutout, her third of the season and the ninth of her career. White has now not allowed a goal in her last 166:19 between the pipes.

At the other end of the ice, Becker freshman netminder Madison Rigsby (2-7-0) piled up 45 saves against 49 shots, but was stuck with the loss.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 15, when they travel to Saint Michael's for a New England Hockey Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt.
