Brolsma Scores Twice, Women’s Ice Hockey Pours it On in Third, Rolls Through Plymouth State, 5-1

Ravens stop three-game skid

Brolsma Brolsma scored twice and added an assist for a three-point night on Friday against Plymouth State.

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 13, 2015) – Freshman forward Alex Brolsma (Bloomington, Minn.) scored twice for her second multiple-goal game of the season on Friday night, and three third-period goals helped the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team roll to a 5-1 win over Plymouth State in ECAC East play at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Junior goaltender Alyssa Altschuler piled up 47 saves in defeat for Plymouth State.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 16-5-1 (10-4-0 ECAC East), while Plymouth State falls to 3-18-2 (3-11-1 ECAC East). It was the final home game of the season for Franklin Pierce, which finishes 10-2-1 over 13 games at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The Ravens are 22-2-1 over 25 games on home ice over the last two seasons.

Plymouth State scored the first period's only goal, on the power play at the 15:46 mark, to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Senior forward Kelsey Cosby fed the puck from the left side across the slot to junior forward Kelsey Lynch in the right-wing circle. Lynch picked the top-left corner from there for her third goal of the season. Sophomore defenseman Haley Branovan tallied an assist on the play as well.

From there, it was five unanswered goals for Franklin Pierce over the final 40 minutes to pick up the 5-1 win, starting with a pair of second-period scores. First, junior forward Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) and sophomore forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) teamed to work the puck into the slot for their line mate, Brolsma. Brolsma put the shot on net from between the hash marks, and the puck hit Altschuler's stick, popped up in the air, drifted over her head and fell into the goal for Brolsma's sixth goal of the campaign at 5:06.

Sophomore forward Alysha Raimo (Fitchburg, Mass.) struck for the eventual game-winner at the 16:41 mark of the middle stanza. Junior forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) originally threw the puck on net from the right side and Raimo finished off the rebound amid a scramble out front for her third goal of the year. Junior forward Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) picked up the other assist.

The Ravens tacked on a trio of insurance markers in the third period, beginning with Brolsma's second of the night at 7:25. On the right side, Ketterman and junior defenseman Sarah Sheils (Pittsburgh, Pa.) worked to get the puck across the slot and to the edge of the left circle for Brolsma. Brolsma took a wrist shot back against the grain and picked the top-right corner of the net.

Just over two minutes later, at 9:34, Franklin Pierce struck just six seconds into a power play, after sophomore defenseman Sara Huff was whistled for high sticking. Brolsma won the offensive-zone faceoff to junior defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.), and both picked up assists on Harron's fourth goal of the season.

Finally, Baker capped the scoring with another power-play marker at 13:03. With the puck at the left point, Raimo sent a pass across to the right point for junior defenseman Haylea Barbieri (Plainville, Mass.), and the latter fired from there. Barbieri's shot was blocked by the defense, but it deflected straight to Baker at the left post, and she finished her team-leading 14th of the season from there.

Sophomore goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) finished with 20 saves against 21 shots to pick up the win (10-2-0) in goal for Franklin Pierce. Altschuler piled up a career-best 47 saves against 52 shots, but was stuck with the loss (3-12-1) between the pipes for Plymouth State.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Feb. 14, when they travel to Manhattanville for an ECAC East contest. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Playland Ice Casino in Rye, N.Y.
