Baker Hat Trick Sends Women’s Ice Hockey to 5-2 Win Over SUNY Canton

Ketterman (1-1-2), Sheils (0-2-2) add two points each

Baker Baker had the seventh three-point game of her career on Friday night with the program's first-ever hat trick.

WINCHENDON, Mass. (December 13, 2013) – Sophomore forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) scored the first three goals of the game to notch a natural hat trick on Friday night and lead the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over SUNY Canton at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Baker's triple marked the first hat trick in program history.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 8-1-0, while SUNY Canton falls to 4-6-2. The two teams will meet again at noon Saturday at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena to wrap up the two-game weekend set. Saturday's game was moved up 90 minutes from its original 1:30 p.m. start in advance of the winter storm threatening the region later Saturday into Sunday.

Baker and the Ravens scored the only two goals of the first period, as she cashed in a pair of power-play markers to stake the team to a 2-0 lead it would never relinquish. First, with sophomore forward Karley Cree in the box for checking, Baker finished off a cross-slot pass from sophomore forward Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Freshman defenseman Katie Flynn (Sandwich, Mass.) added an assist as well at the 4:21 mark. Cree took another checking minor at 8:36, and it took Baker only 27 seconds to find the net again. This time, the shot came from the bottom of the right circle and was deflected by the stick of a defenseman up and over the shoulder of SUNY Canton freshman goaltender Shayna Dominique. Sophomore forward Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) and sophomore defenseman Sarah Sheils (Pittsburg, Pa.) had the assists at 9:03.

For Baker, it was her second multiple-goal game of the season, as well as the second of her career.

Baker made it three in a row at the 6:02 mark of the second period with a do-it-yourself effort in the offensive end. She took control of the puck on the right-wing side, eluded a pair of defenders, made her way into the slot and beat Dominique inside the far post to complete the first hat trick in program history. For Baker, it was her fourth three-point outing of the season, as well as the seventh of her career.

The Ravens pushed the lead as high as 4-0 at the 11:12 mark. Sheils and freshman forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) worked the puck to sophomore forward Haylea Barbieri (Plainville, Mass.), who curled into the right circle and snapped home her first collegiate goal.

SUNY Canton got on the scoreboard and cut the gap to 4-1 at 16:24, on the fourth goal of the season for freshman forward Bernadette O'Connell. A feed from fellow freshman forward Jessica Kistabish sent O'Connell with a head of steam down the right-wing side of the attack zone. O'Connell found a shooting lane around the defense and, though Franklin Pierce freshman goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) got a piece of the shot, the puck wound up in the net to break up the shutout.

The Kangaroos closed within a goal with a power-play tally 8:46 into the final frame. Freshman forward Tia Mitchell put away a rebound for her second goal of the year just 21 seconds after sophomore defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) was whistled for interference at 8:25. Sophomore defenseman Devyn Hutcheson and freshman defenseman Caroline Mundy picked up the assists on the play.

Ketterman capped the scoring with her fourth of the year with just nine seconds to play to create the 5-2 final. Off a turnover by SUNY Canton in its own end, freshman forward Nina Danforth (Stratford, Conn.) got the puck to Ketterman just on the left-wing side of the slot. Ketterman had a clear path to the net, took it, deked around Dominique and slid her fourth of the season inside the left post.

White made 19 saves to pick up the win (5-1-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, Dominique turned aside 31 shots, but suffered the loss (4-6-2) between the pipes for SUNY Canton.
