Ketterman collects first two career points

WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 8, 2013) – Freshman forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) scored a second-period goal and later assisted on the third-period game-winner, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team picked up a 4-2 win over Massachusetts Boston on Friday night at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Junior forward Alyssa Sullivan and sophomore forward Samantha Fallon scored in the loss for Boston.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-0-0, while Massachusetts Boston falls to 0-2-0 (0-1-0 ECAC East).

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring early on Friday night, striking 3:32 into the first period, when sophomore forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) jammed home a rebound for her third goal of the season. Sophomore forward Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) took the original shot from the right circle on the play and picked up one assist, while sophomore forward Michelle Stock (Austin, Texas) had the other.

After the rest of the first period went without a goal and each team came up empty on an abbreviated power-play opportunity, the Ravens doubled the lead to 2-0 at the 3:37 mark of the second period. The scoring chance developed at the end of a rush up the ice by the crimson and gray, with Ketterman finishing off her first career goal from the right circle off an assist from sophomore defenseman Sarah Sheils (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Franklin Pierce got a chance to lengthen the lead further when freshman defenseman KC McGinley was whistled for hooking at 14:42. Instead, Boston struck while shorthanded to cut the lead in half and make it a one-goal game. After a Franklin Pierce rush was stymied at the other end of the ice, a counter-rush by the Beacons created an odd-man situation. Franklin Pierce freshman goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) made the stop on the initial shot from senior forward Sarahanne Cavolo, but Sullivan knocked home the rebound for her first goal of the season at 15:48.

The Beacons would get in more penalty trouble near the end of the second period, as senior forward Courtney White was called for tripping at 18:58 and junior defenseman Angela Dandreo was sent away for holding at 19:38. The ensuing 5-on-3 carried over to the third period and the Ravens capitalized on the fresh sheet of ice. Ketterman, patrolling the point with the two-man advantage, sent a pass from the center of the blue line to freshman forward Nina Danforth (Stratford, Conn.) at the bottom of the left-wing circle. Danforth quickly sent a pass across the low slot to sophomore forward Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.), who finished off her first of the season at the right post just 25 seconds into the final stanza.

A shade over two minutes later, at 2:33, Franklin Pierce capped its scoring and pushed the lead to 4-1. Sophomore forward Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) and senior forward Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) teamed to get the puck to sophomore defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) at the left point. Arnold unleashed a shot from there, which was deflected by the defense en route and wound up in the back of the net for her first goal of the campaign.

The Beacons got back on the board at the 9:45 mark, amid a skirmish in front of the Franklin Pierce crease. Fallon eventually jammed home her second goal of the year, while junior defenseman Jess Salisbury and Sullivan picked up the helpers. Boston would pull junior goaltender Kailyn Burke in favor of an extra attacker over the final 96 seconds, but could not find the net again, as Franklin Pierce skated away with the 4-2 win.

Making her collegiate debut in net, O'Neil made 26 saves to pick up the win (1-0-0) for Franklin Pierce. At the other end, Burke stopped 17 shots and took the loss (0-1-0) between the pipes for Massachusetts Boston.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 12, when they travel to Holy Cross. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hart Recreation Center in Worcester, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Friday, Nov. 22 against Stevenson at 7 p.m.
