Three-Goal Second Sends Women’s Ice Hockey to 3-1 Win and Weekend Sweep of UNE

Ketterman pushes point-scoring streak to four games

BIDDEFORD, Maine. (January 18, 2014) – Sophomore defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) scored a shorthanded goal, the eventual game-winner, as part of a three-goal second period on Saturday night for the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team, which notched a 3-1 road win over University of New England at Harold Alfond Forum. Freshman defenseman Melissa Boudreau scored the lone goal in defeat for UNE.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 14-2-1 and is unbeaten in its last six, while Univ. of New England falls to 5-9-3. Combined with Friday night's 5-2 win, the Ravens post a two-game weekend sweep over UNE. It is the fourth weekend sweep of an opponent by Franklin Pierce on the season, as well as the sixth time the team has won games on back-to-back days. The Ravens and Nor'easters will meet one more time this year, on Feb. 7 at UNE.

After a scoreless first period, the Ravens surged to a 3-0 lead with a three-goal second stanza. Freshman forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) opened the scoring at the 7:03 mark with her ninth goal of the season. Sophomore forward Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.) and freshman forward Nina Danforth (Stratford, Conn.) provided the assists as the whole line got in on the goal. For Ketterman, the goal pushed her point-scoring streak to four games (4-2-6).

Later, with sophomore forward Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) in the penalty box for hooking, Franklin Pierce struck for its second shorthanded goal in as many nights, though this one came with a goaltender in the UNE net. Arnold, who had three assists in Friday night's victory, put home her third goal of the campaign, unassisted, at 13:53, to cap a four-point weekend.

After killing off a bit of penalty trouble which included 1:24 of five-on-three advantage for UNE, the Ravens got a power-play chance of their own -- their fifth man-advantage of the night -- after UNE freshman defenseman Amy Curry was whistled for checking at 15:52. The power play was slightly abbreviated after 16 seconds of four-on-four play, but Franklin Pierce cashed in anyway. Sophomore forward Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) finished off her sixth goal of the season, while Faia picked up the lone assist at 17:13.

Facing a three-goal deficit and on the power play, UNE pulled the goaltender for an extra attacker with 94 seconds to play in search of an improbable comeback, after much of the third period went without further scoring. If nothing else, the extra-attacker situation allowed the Nor'easters to break up the shutout bid of Franklin Pierce freshman goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.). Boudreau netted her first collegiate goal on the power play, with freshman forward Mary Wirth picking up the assist at 18:35. UNE would keep the goaltender on the bench, but could find no further scoring, as the Ravens left with a 3-1 victory and the weekend sweep.

For her part, White finished the night with 25 saves to pick up the win (7-2-1) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Sophomore Courtney Kendall, the only UNE goaltender who did not see the ice at Franklin Pierce on Friday night, stopped 31 shots but took the loss (3-3-1) anyway in net for UNE.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Jan. 21, when they return home to host Saint Michael's. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
