Barbieri, Arnold, Wiley & Co. Lead Women’s Hockey Over UNE, 5-2

Six Ravens notch multiple points

Barbieri Barbieri put together her first career multiple-goal game in Friday night's win over UNE.

WINCHENDON, Mass. (January 17, 2014) – Sophomore defenseman Haylea Barbieri (Plainville, Mass.) scored twice on Friday night, including the game-winning goal, while senior forward Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) added two goals of her own, to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team to a 5-2 win over University of New England at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Freshman defenseman Amy Curry had a shorthanded goal in defeat for UNE.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 13-2-1 and is unbeaten in its last five, while Univ. of New England falls to 5-8-3. The Ravens were particularly dominant through the first two periods, as they amassed a 24-15 advantage in shots, en route to a 31-23 edge for the game.

Franklin Pierce finished 3-for-5 on the power play on Friday night and wasted no time setting the tone on that front, as UNE junior defenseman Jaclyn Bria was whistled for tripping just 93 seconds into the proceedings. The Ravens converted halfway through the ensuing man-advantage, at the 2:32 mark, after sophomore forward Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.) worked the puck to sophomore defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) at the center of the blue line. Arnold wound and unleashed a howitzer from there, which Barbieri deflected en route to notch her third goal of the year.

Another power-play goal for the Ravens came at the 7:04 mark, this time with UNE attempting to kill off a bench minor for too many players on the ice. Freshman defenseman Katie Flynn (Sandwich, Mass.) sent the puck into the high slot for sophomore forward Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.), who found Wiley open and with room to work with on the left side. From the left circle, Wiley sniped the top-left corner with a wrist shot for her third goal of the campaign. The goal spelled the end of the night for UNE sophomore goaltender Samantha Scobee, who was lifted in favor of freshman Sydney Helmbrecht.

The Nor'easters cut the lead to 2-1 at the 15:37 mark, in a delayed-penalty situation. Freshman forward Abby Kinens jammed home a rebound for her first career goal.

Franklin Pierce picked up the only goal of the second stanza, with the team's third power-play conversion of the night, with this one coming against a hooking minor to freshman forward Shannon Smith. This time, freshman forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) set up Arnold at the center of the blue line. Arnold let another cannonade fly, and Helmbrecht was able to make the initial save. However, the rebound came straight out into the slot for Barbieri, who cashed her second of the night on the rebound for the eventual game-winner. It marked the first career multiple-goal game for Barbieri.

UNE again closed to within a goal, this time at 3-2 with a shorthanded marker at 12:20 of the third period. Smith won an offensive-zone faceoff to senior forward Jenni Poulin, who dropped the puck back to Curry at the right point. Curry lifted a shot through traffic from there, and the seeing-eye shot found its way behind Franklin Pierce freshman goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.). For UNE, it was the second shorthanded goal of the season and, for Curry, it was her first career goal.

Franklin Pierce picked up an insurance marker less than two minutes later, at 14:13, when sophomore forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) jammed home a rebound for her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Doucette picked up her second assist of the night on the play, while Arnold dished out her third helper. For Arnold, the assist finished off her first career three-point game.

After Franklin Pierce sophomore forward Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) was whistled for slashing at 19:04, UNE pulled Helmbrecht for the extra attacker in hopes of a miraculous, final-minute comeback. Instead, it would lead to Franklin Pierce's second shorthanded goal of the season. Baker won a defensive-zone faceoff to Flynn, who chipped the puck out of the zone and through the neutral zone on the left-wing side. Wiley broke out of the zone with a head of steam, was the first to track down the puck, fought off a defender and slid her second goal of the night into the empty net to cap the scoring and create the 5-2 final. For Wiley, it marked her first career multiple-goal game.

O'Neil finished with 21 saves to pick up the win (7-0-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, Scobee made two saves against four shots over 7:04 before being pulled. Helmbrecht made 24 stops against 26 shots the rest of the way and suffered the loss (1-4-1) between the pipes for UNE.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 18, when they make the return trip to Univ. of New England to finish off the two-game weekend series. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford, Maine. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Tuesday, Jan. 21 against Saint Michael's at 7:30 p.m.
