Second Period Onslaught Leads Women’s Ice Hockey to 6-0 Whitewashing of UNE

Three Ravens notch two points each

WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 30, 2012) – Freshman forwards Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) and Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) each notched a goal and an assist in a four-goal second period on Friday night on the way to a 6-0 win for the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team over University of New England at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The game marked the first shutout and the first victory on home ice in program history for Franklin Pierce.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-5-0, while UNE falls to 0-4-0. Franklin Pierce piled up a season high in shots on goal and held a 42-10 advantage on the night. It was the second of three meetings between the two teams this season, and Franklin Pierce has won the first two by a combined score of 12-1.

After the first period went without a goal, the Ravens broke the deadlock with a goal at 4:11 of the second stanza, the first of four goals in a span of 12:38. Freshman defenseman Sarah Sheils (Pittsburg, Pa.) forced a UNE turnover as the Nor'easters attempted to break out of their own end. The change of possession left Faia and Doucette alone against UNE freshman goaltender Samantha Scobee, and Doucette finished off her fourth goal of the campaign.

Franklin Pierce then struck three times in just 2:24, beginning at the 14:25 mark, when Faia jammed home a rebound amidst a scrum in front of the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season, while Doucette and freshman forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) picked up the assists. Just 48 seconds later, freshman defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) forced another turnover in the Ravens attacking zone and then snapped a shot to the back of the net from the left-wing circle for her first career goal, unassisted.

Another 1:36 after the Arnold goal, freshman defenseman Nicole Palermo (Warwick, R.I.) would notch her first career goal as well, as she stuffed home a rebound with the Ravens on the power play. Freshman forward Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.) and junior forward Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) tallied the assists on the play.

Franklin Pierce would tack on two more goals in the final five minutes of the third period to create the 6-0 final. At the 15:41 mark, freshman forward Samantha Hulme (West Simsbury, Conn.) sent the puck behind the net to freshman forward Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). Cahill stepped out from behind the cage and slipped a shot inside the right post for her second goal of the year. In the final minute, at the 19:27 mark, Baker forced a turnover along the left-wing halfboards in the offensive end. From there, she did the work herself, deking into the slot and snapping her fourth goal of the year to the back of the net.

Junior goaltender Amelea Gray (Bozeman, Mont.) started and stopped all 10 shots UNE sent on goal over the opening 54:45 to pick up the win (2-5-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Meghan Nelson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) did not face a shot over the final 5:15 to finish off the program's first shutout.

Scobee faced a barrage of vulcanized rubber at her end of the rink, as she suffered the loss (0-3-0) despite making 36 saves on the night.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Dec. 1, when they remain home to host University of New England in the second game of the weekend set. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
