Baker, Faia, Sheils all collect three or more points

BIDDEFORD, Maine (November 16, 2012) – Freshman forward Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) scored twice in the first period and later added an assist on Friday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team to the program's first-ever victory, 6-1, over University of New England at Harold Alfond Forum. Freshman defenseman Sarah Sheils (Pittsburgh, Pa.) piled up four points on one goal and three assists along the way.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 1-4-0, while UNE, a fellow first-year program, falls to 0-2-0. Franklin Pierce controlled the flow of play throughout the afternoon, particularly in the first two periods, to finish the game with a 39-19 advantage in shots on goal.

The Ravens jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opening period with a trio of tallies in a span of 9:15. Faia opened the scoring at the 9:56 mark, when she snapped a shot inside the left post for her third goal of the campaign. Freshman forwards Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) and Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) notched the assists. Less than two minutes later, at the 11:47 mark, freshman forward Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) made it 2-0 when she jammed home the rebound of a shot by freshman forward Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.). Sheils added her first point of the night with an assist.

The Faia-Baker-Doucette line would strike again in the final minute of the stanza as Faia put a shot to the roof of the net at the 19:11 mark to be the first Raven in program history to score multiple goals in a game. Baker and Doucette would both notch their second helpers of the day.

The Nor'easters got on the board at the 9:11 mark of the second period with a solo effort while shorthanded. Junior forward Jenni Poulin beat multiple defenders and put a shot under the crossbar to cut the lead to 3-1.

Franklin Pierce reclaimed the two-goal lead before the second intermission when Baker notched her second goal of the season with 1:42 to play in the frame. She finished a play in front of the net while Faia and Sheils tallied the assists.

The Ravens added a pair of special teams goals in the third period to create the 6-1 final. At the 15:44 mark, Sheils scored unassisted while shorthanded, the second goal of her season. At the 18:32 mark, Sheils was stymied, but freshman Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) knocked home the rebound to collect the first goal of her career.

Junior goaltender Amelea Gray (Bozeman, Mont.) made 18 saves against 19 shots to pick up the win (1-4-0) in net for Franklin Pierce, her first victory as a Raven. Freshman Samantha Scobee turned aside 33 shots but suffered the loss (0-2-0) for UNE.

The Ravens return to the ice on Monday, Nov. 19, when they return home to host Saint Anselm. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
