Baker scores second goal in as many games

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (January 26, 2013) – In a game which mirrored Friday night's contest in many ways, freshman forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) scored in the third period on Saturday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Sacred Heart at Wonderland of Ice. Sophomore forward Casey Stathopoulos had a goal and an assist in the victory for Sacred Heart.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 5-12-0, while Sacred Heart improves to 11-11-2 and sweeps the two-game weekend series. The game featured more offensive firepower than Friday's tilt, with Sacred Heart enjoying a 45-35 advantage in shots on goal. Once again, the Pioneers did damage on the power play, converting twice in four chances, while Franklin Pierce came up empty on its only opportunity.

Sacred Heart put home two goals in the second half of the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Stathopoulos struck first, on the power play, at the 10:39 mark, for her fourth point against the Ravens this weekend. Her team-leading 12th goal of the season came off an assist from sophomore Whitney Henderson. Stathopoulos provided the helper at 18:07 on the seventh of the campaign for junior forward Sara Hanna.

After the second period went without a goal, the third period played out very similarly to the third period on Friday. Baker pulled the Ravens within a goal at 2-1, with her seventh of the year off an assist from junior forward Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) at 5:06. However, Sacred Heart would pick up an insurance goal and create the 3-1 final at 10:39, when senior forward Sarah Delaney scored her third of the year on the power play. Junior defenseman Catie Ladner and sophomore forward Meaghan Souza provided the assists.

Junior goaltender Amelea Gray (Bozeman, Mont.) piled up a career-high 42 saves, but was saddled with the loss (5-11-0) in front of the Franklin Pierce cage. Freshman Nicole Magee stopped 34 shots to pick up her first career win (1-0-0) in net for Sacred Heart.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Feb. 8, when they travel to Saint Michael's. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt.
