Women’s Ice Hockey Dropped by Sacred Heart in Rutland Herald Invitational Consolation, 7-1

Doucette snaps lengthy scoreless streak

Doucette Doucette scored Franklin Pierce's first goal in a span of 130:47 against Sacred Heart on Saturday.

RUTLAND, Vt. (January 12, 2013) – Freshman forward Anne Gomolinski and sophomore forward Casey Stathopoulos scored two goals each on Saturday afternoon, as Sacred Heart posted a 7-1 victory over the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team in the consolation round of the Rutland Herald Invitational, hosted by Castleton State at Spartan Arena. Freshman forward Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) scored the lone goal for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-9-0, while Sacred Heart improves to 11-9-2.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring at the 4:55 mark of the first period, with a power-play goal off the stick of sophomore forward Alex Davis. Sophomore forward Natasha Klinoff and senior forward Sarah Delaney provided the assists on Davis' seventh of the season. Just 1:46 later, Gomolinski scored her first career goal, the eventual game-winner, unassisted.

The Ravens got on the board at 9:57, when Doucette finished off a setup by freshman forwards Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) and Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.). The team-leading eighth of the season for Doucette snapped a scoreless streak of 130:47 for Franklin Pierce.

Sacred Heart struck twice more before the first intermission to take a 4-1 lead into the locker room. At 14:48, Gomolinski notched her second of the afternoon, while Stathopoulos notched her 10th of the campaign at 17:02. Sophomore defenseman Catherine Chittick contributed an assist on each goal.

After a scoreless second period, three goals in the third created the 7-1 final for the Pioneers. Stathopoulos finished off her two-goal day at 7:34, tying for the team lead with her 11th of the season, as Chittick dished out her third assist. The second of the season for sophomore defenseman Meaghan Souza at 11:18 and the third of the year for sophomore forward Cara Curran on the power play at 12:07 capped the scoring.

Freshman goaltender Meghan Nelson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) started in net for Franklin Pierce, made 15 saves against 19 shots in the first period and suffered the loss (0-1-0). Junior Amelea Gray (Bozeman, Mont.) stopped 25 of 28 shots over the final two frames. Junior Alexius Schutt made 35 saves against 36 shots to pick up the win (6-6-1) in goal for Sacred Heart.

The Ravens return to the ice on Wednesday, Jan. 16, when they travel to Massachusetts Boston. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena in Boston, Mass. The Ravens next play at home on Friday, Feb. 15 against Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
