Ruayruen, Women’s Golf off to Strong Start at Michael Corbett Fall Classic

ERIE, Pa. (September 18, 2022) -- Sophomore Phisonlaya Ruayruen (Chiangmai, Thailand) was anything but quiet at Whispering Woods Golf Club on Sunday afternoon for the Franklin Pierce University women's golf team. She fired the round of the day, a four-under 68, and leads a 63-golfer field by six shots at the midpoint of the Michael Corbett Fall Classic, hosted by Gannon. Her performance led the Ravens to an opening-round 307 (+19), which was good enough for a two-stroke lead on the 5803-yard, par-72 track.

Ruayruen opened play for the shotgun start on the 18th hole and wasted little time getting going. Birdies at the first, third and fourth holes had her at three-under just five holes into a round which would ultimately feature six birdies and a pair of bogeys. Ruayruen's closest competition is Gannon freshman Zoey McClain, who sits six shots back at 74 (+2). Gannon sophomore Ditte Petersen is third at 75 (+3).

Franklin Pierce has three golfers in the top 10 and all of its five-player lineup in the top 30 midway through the two-day tournament. Behind Ruayruen, sophomore Kesinee Prukmathakul (Bangkok, Thailand) and freshman Lorelai Flanagan (Arlington, Mass.) are part of a five-way tie for ninth at 79 (+7). Senior Micaela Leandro (Harlingen, Texas) is tied-16th at 81 (+9), and senior Alia Godek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) is tied-30th at 86 (+14).

It all added up to a 19-over 307 for the Ravens as a team, which was good for the first-round lead in the 11-team tournament. Franklin Pierce is two shots in front of host Gannon at 309 (+21). From there, it's another 15 shots back to third-place Millersville at 324 (+36).

The Michael Corbett Fall Classic will wrap up on Monday, with the second and final round at Whispering Woods.
