Schmidt snipes back to back 83’s in aiding Women’s Golf to fourth place finish at Barton

WILSON, N.C. (March 17, 2015) – Freshman Taylor Schmidt (West Springfield, Mass.) shot lights out with an 83 on Monday, and another 83 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 166 to finish fifth in the Barton College Intercollegiate Tournament held at the Wilson Country Club in Wilson, North Carolina. The tournament marked the Ravens first action on the links this spring.

Schmidt's performance was backed by a strong showing from freshman Camden Morrison (Millis, Mass.) who was equally impressive over the two days. Morrison also shot an 83 after her 18 on Monday, sitting in a tie with Schmidt. However, her Tuesday round would not be as kind, as she shot a 92 to close out with a 175. That score would however, put her in a tie for 10th giving the Ravens two total representatives in the top part of the leaderboard.

Fellow classmate Anna Haynes (Hopedale, Mass.) made the best of her tournament, as she stayed consistent shooting back to back 91's for a two day total of 182. Her score would put her 15th on the leaderboard over her two days on the greens.

Rounding out the Ravens' competition would be freshman Ashley Chubbuck (Windsor, Maine) and Katy Lounsbery (Middletown, N.Y.). Chubbuck would fire a 95 on Monday for a solid spot on the leaderboard, before slipping on Tuesday, shooting a 101 to finish with a 196 and ending up in 27th spot. Lounsbery shot well on Monday with a 112 before faltering on Tuesday along with the majority of her teammates, as she shot a 125 to help her finish 39th.

As a team over the two day span, the Ravens combined for 719 (+143), shooting 352 on Monday and a 367 on Tuesday.

Erskine College came out as the top team in the tournament, as all of their players at worst in 16th, with their top four players finishing in the top 6. They ran away from the competition, shooting a 655. That score would be 53 total strokes better than the second place team, Lenoir-Rhyne. Erskine also finished the top three players in the tournament, including both Krysta Schaus and Macarena Basagoiti who each finished 1-2, and shot a tournament-best 79 on Tuesday.

The Ravens won't see competition for almost another month, as their next action will come on April 12 and 13 when they travel to Penn Oaks Golf Club in West Chester, Pa. The tournament will be hosted by Westchester University.
