Women’s Bowling Finishes Sixth at N.J. Jamboree

STRATFORD, N.J. (November 5, 2017) – The no. 22 nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University women's bowling team improved their spot in the standings each day to place sixth at the New Jersey Jamboree this past Friday through Sunday at the 30 Strikes Bowling Center.

Over the weekend, the Ravens were 7-5 overall as they dropped 12,106 total pins. Overall, the Crimson and Grey are 16-10 through three tournaments this year.

Individually, sophomore Alexa Asta (Jackson, N.J.) ranked 13th out of the 117 bowler field as she averaged a team-leading 194 score over five matches Saturday. Teammates Jessica Davies (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Nicolette Vucak (Garfield, N.J.) placed within the individual top-25 with 18th and 24th place finishes respectively.

Day One – Friday

The Ravens were 3-2 over their five matches Friday as they combined to roll over 4,337 pins. FPU's three victories came versus Howard University (886-850), Wilmington University (912-843) and Felician University (929-881) while both setbacks came against fellow nationally-ranked foes. Through five games, the Ravens are in ninth place.

The team of Asta, Vucak, senior Colleen Kelly (Quincy, Mass.), sophomore Krysta Peirce (Casco, Mich.) and Davies won all three matches. Their best score in the duel versus Howard was a 206 in the fourth game.

The five bowlers proceeded to rebound from the tough loss against no. 8 nationally-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University and rolled the highest games of the afternoon in competition with Wilmington. Their highest total came in game two as the Crimson and Grey tallied a 224. They followed that up with a 212 in the third game and a 213 in the fifth and final string.

Sophomore Katey Comstock (Hartland, Vt.), freshman Skyler Mulligan-Brown (New Milford, Conn.), senior Brittany Hovan (Paramus, N.J.) also bowled a game with co-captains Kelly and Davies as they knocked over a team-high 185 during the first string versus no. 21 nationally-ranked Saint Francis (N.Y.) College.

Day Two - Saturday

On Saturday, the Ravens went 2-2 as they knocked over 3,613 pins. Their wins came against Kutztown University (962-843) and no. 13 nationally-ranked Monmouth University (962-893). The .500 mark on the day moved the Crimson and Grey to 5-4 and improved their spot in the team rankings from ninth to eighth place with a total pinfall of 7,950 across nine games this weekend.

Asta started and played in all five games for the Ravens including the bye. She dropped a team-leading total of 970 pins. Teammates Davies (942 pins), Peirce (909 pins), and Kelly (854 pins) also appeared in all five contests for the Crimson and Grey as well.

In the Ravens first win of the day versus Kutztown, Davies rolled a day and game-best 226 score for FPU while Asta followed with a 200 even mark. Asta also racked up the squad-high in the setback to Morgan state at 202.

Vucak recorded her highest mark of the second day in the win against Monmouth with a team-high 224. Kelly completed her 10 strings at 199, her best game of the day, which was the second-best tally for the Ravens.

Day Three – Sunday

Sunday was a best of seven games format as the Ravens earned a sixth-place finish.  They earned two wins, a 4-1 (926-874) decision versus Kutztown and another 4-1 (978-828) victory versus Caldwell. FPU suffered a heartbreaking seven-game loss to no. 16 LIU Brooklyn in their final match of the day.

Asta, Vucak, Peirce, Kelly, and Davies rolled the Ravens best score of the day during the fifth and final game versus Kutztown as they rolled a 215 total.

Franklin Pierce has a two-week layoff until they return to action on Friday, November 17th for the first day of the Hawk Classic at the Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del.
