Chargers Capture Momentum in Second Quarter, Down Ravens 66-47

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (January 23, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team held a 12-8 first quarter lead, but a 21-6 second stanza by Northeast-10 Conference opponent the University of New Haven helped the Chargers erase the deficit and win 66-47 Tuesday evening at the Charger Gymnasium. With the win, UNH improves to 8-10, 4-9 NE10 while the Crimson and Grey lost their 12th conference contest.

Raven senior guard Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) paved the way for the Birds with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-8 (75.0%) shooting to go along with five rebounds, two blocks, and one assist. Teammate Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) poured in 10 points while grabbing nine rebounds and matching Thacker with two stuffs.

Three players tallied double-digit points for the hosts as junior guard Alexandria Kerr dropped a game-high 19 points and three steals. Freshman guard Brie Pergola chipped in 13 points, six boards, and six helpers while coming up with two thefts. Raven senior forward Diondra Woumn (Lynn, Mass.) started the scoring when she corralled a pass from Hannah Martin (Woodland Hills, Calif.) down on the lower right block and banked the ball off the glass for two points. The Chargers moved ahead 6-4 via a Pergola mid-range jumper at the 6:44 mark. Franklin Pierce continued to attack New Haven in the post when Mosley scooped a layup in to reestablish a two-point lead. Two Claudia Tucci (Trumbull, Conn.) freebies upped the Ravens edge to 10-6 in the early going. Both squads swapped buckets over the final few minutes as the Ravens led 12-8 after the opening 10 minutes.

The Ravens defensive unit held the hosts to a 3-of-17 (17.6%) shooting performance in the first quarter, but the Chargers kept the extra possession alive with five offensive boards.

New Haven tallied a 10-0 run to begin the second period as a Pergola and1 turned a deficit into an 18-12 Charger advantage just four minutes into the quarter. The Ravens stopped play with a timeout looking to cool UNH's momentum, but the hosts continued to add onto their lead with seven more markers, including a Sianna Van Dyke uncontested left wing trey to lead 25-12. FPU took another timeout and racked up their first points of the stanza when Woumn cleaned up a missed jumper to halt the 17-0 scoring binge. With 10 seconds to go, Mosley cut the Charger lead to 11, 29-18 at the break when she drove through traffic, put up a layup, missed, grabbed the rebound and drained a fall-away jumper at the buzzer.

The hosts racked up three buckets in a row to start the third to lead by 17, 35-18. On the next possession for the Ravens, Thacker dished the rock to Martin who rifled home a three-ball to make the score 35-21. Thacker notched five straight points off a layup and a three-pointer to bring the game to 36-26. A few minutes later, FPU freshman guard Sophia Holmes (Oakland, Maine) came up with a steal and floated home a shot to cut the deficit to single figures at 37-28. Following the Holmes steal and score, New Haven racked up 13 consecutive markers to open up a 22 point, 50-28 lead.

Two Tucci free throws brought the Charger edge to 19, 54-35 with 8:10 left, but New Haven's lead grew to a game-high 25, 64-39 after a Kerr lay-in.

The Ravens remain away from campus Saturday when they travel to American International College for a 1:30 p.m. NE10 showdown.
