Last Second Shot Comes Up Short, Owls Hang On to Beat Ravens

RINDGE, N.H. (January 17, 2018) – Franklin Pierce University women's basketball sophomore guard Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) dropped a career-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and one assist in a 55-54 defeat at the hands of Northeast-10 Conference opponent Southern Connecticut State University Wednesday evening at The Fieldhouse. With the victory, the Owls move to 13-6 overall and 7-4 NE10 while the Ravens dropped their 10th conference showdown of the campaign.

Mosley buried 7-of-13 (53.8%) of her shot attempts and was 4-of-5 (80.0%) from downtown in the duel. She topped her previous personal-high best of 17 points scored in her collegiate debut last year versus Goldey-Beacom on November 11th. She was automatic from the field in the third quarter as she made all three of her attempts for 10 of her 22 total markers.

Teammate and fellow captain Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) was the only other Raven to tally double-digit scoring with a 10 point, six rebound and four assist effort. Freshman guard Demi Akins (Cambridge, Mass.) added eight points, two assists, and one steal. Akins had a chance at the potential game-winning shot with one second to go, but her corner three-ball banged off the front rim.

As a team, the Birds buried a season-high 58.3% (7-of-12) of their long-range attempts in the contest.

Owl senior forward Abby Hurlbert manufactured a team-high 18 points. Bench player Chandler Williams chipped in 12 points while Kiana Steinauer produced three points, three assists, four steals and a game-high 11 boards.

Raven senior forward Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine) began the contest by knocking down an uncontested lay-up from the left block to give the hosts an early 2-0 advantage. With the game tied at four-all, Hurlbert buried two corner threes to up the Owl advantage to 10-4. A few possessions later, Diondra Woumn (Lynn, Mass.) drove down the middle of the lane to cut the Raven deficit to four with a scoop off the glass, but the Owl sophomore forward concluded the period with a jumper as the guests held a 15-9 lead after one.

The second quarter started with back-to-back treys by Williams and Mosley as the Ravens brought the edge down to six, 18-12. Williams sank a mid-range jumper to push the lead to eight, but a Mayo layup and a Thacker catch and shoot three-ball off a designed inbounds play made it a one-score game at 20-17 with 7:33 left in the stanza. SCSU increased their lead to 10 twice over the next few minutes until an Akins long-range connection and a Mosley second-chance score off a missed Mayo mid-range jumper brought the Raven deficit to 35-30 at the break.

In the third, Akins tallied the first points of the new half by driving into the restricted area to put her squad down by three, 35-32. An Imani Wheeler free throw moved Southern Connecticut ahead 41-33, but the Ravens embarked on a 10-2 scoring run to knot the game at 43 all using nine points from Mosley which included a banked in three-ball. The guests proceeded to rattle off five straight points of their own to hold a five-point 48-43 advantage following three quarters.

A two and a half minute scoreless drought ensued until Williams extended the Owl mini-run with a jumper. Mosley dropped the Raven deficit down to four by stepping back behind the line on the right wing for a three-point bomb. Williams responded with a three of her own to up the edge back to seven.

The Ravens produced down the stretch by tallying eight consecutive markers to take only their second lead of the contest, 54-53 when Thacker brought the ball to the rack from the left side off a screen and converted a lay-in. Hurlbert matched Thacker's post-score with one of her own as she spun off the right block and powered the rock into the net to give the guests a 55-54 advantage.

Franklin Pierce had a few chances to retake the lead, Mayo missed a layup, recovered her own miss, but had the ball stolen away. Following a missed Hurlburt layup, Akins lost the ball in the right corner as Steinauer stripped the rock, but Murphy Murad missed a three. The Ravens had no timeouts and brought the ball up the floor and settled on an Akins uncontested corner trey that clanked off the front of the rim as time expired.

Franklin Pierce remains home on Saturday for the conclusion of their three-game home swing when they tip-off against NE10 opponent Adelphi University at 1:30 p.m.
