Woumn Drops Career-Best 16 Points, but Queens (N.Y.) Rallies Late for Non-Conference Win

QUEENS, N.Y. (December 16, 2017) – Franklin Pierce University women's basketball senior forward Diondra Woumn (Lynn, Mass.) scored a career-high 16 points, but the Ravens suffered a 73-66 overtime loss to non-conference opponent Queens (N.Y.) College Saturday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Gymnasium. With the win, the Knights charge ahead to 5-4 overall while the Ravens drop to 4-8.

Woumn drained 62.5% (5-of-8) of her attempts from the floor in 37 minutes off the bench as the Ravens leading scorer. She snagged eight boards and blocked a game-high two shots as well. Fellow team captains Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) and Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) notched 14 and 13 points respectively. Mosley dished out a game-best four assists while Thacker grabbed a match-high nine rebounds.

For the Knights, sophomore guard Beth Bonin dropped a game-best 24 points. Taliyah Hopkins (22 points) and Marina Ramon Lopez (11 points) were the only other players in double-figures for the hosts. Franklin Pierce outrebounded Queens by a 46-to-32 margin in a game that saw eight ties and five lead changes. The Ravens led heading into the fourth quarter but were outscored 32-17 over the final 15 minutes of action.

Raven freshman forward Hannah Martin (Woodland Hills, Calif.) began the duel by burying a jumper off a feed from Thacker. On the next trip down the floor, Bonin answered with a layup of her own to knot the score at two all. Ramon Lopez cleaned up a missed three-ball and notched a second chance bucket. Bonin capped off a stretch of six consecutive markers by lofting a floater while driving right to move the Knights ahead 6-2.

Franklin Pierce eventually tied the game on a Demi Akins (Cambridge, Mass.) three-ball which used a kind bounce off the front of the rim and fell through to tie the score. Immediately following a full timeout by the hosts, Queens regained the edge on the strength of a Merrick Rowland long-range connection. Freya Cooney (Woodbridge, England) and Ramon Lopez traded buckets until Thacker buried a three to tie the duel once again. With 13 seconds left on the clock, Bonin drained a trey to up the Knight advantage to three, 17-14, but Claudia Tucci (Trumbull, Conn.) dumped in a layup at the buzzer as FPU trailed 17-16 after one quarter.

The Ravens started the second stanza scoring four straight points off two Mosley free throws and a Woumn jumper. Queens finally got on the board three minutes and 15 seconds into the quarter when Hopkins hit a jumper. After the Hopkins field goal, FPU went on a 12-0 run to increase their lead to double-figures at 32-19. Queens brought their deficit back into single figures with 16 ticks left on the clock when Bonin buried another three as Pierce held a 36-28 halftime lead.

Queens scored four straight during the opening portion of the third quarter to cut the deficit to two possessions at 36-32. Mosley tallied back-to-back jumpers to increase the Raven lead to 40-32. With Pierce ahead 44-36, Ramon Lopez converted an and1 to bring the Raven edge to five. Thacker hit a three-ball and Mosley followed with an offensive rebound and put back to push the lead back to 10, 49-39. Hopkins sank a jumper with five seconds to go, but the Knights trailed 49-41 heading into the final 10 minutes.

Rowland opened the fourth period with two conversions from the line. Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine) stopped the Ravens scoreless drought by draining a layup. Hopkins answered back with a two of her own and Mayo followed by hitting a jumper. Bonin buried a three, Nalae Crosland manufactured a jumper and Hopkins received an outlet pass, drove down the right side of the court and lifted a layup up and in while being fouled. Hopkins made the freebie as the game was tied 53-53 following the 8-0 mini-spurt.

Woumn would hit one of two at the free throw line and Hopkins collected an offensive board following a Bonin missed three and put the rock in for a second chance layup as Queens clung to a one-point lead 55-54 with 2:08 left to play. Mosley fouled Emer Moloney and she split her attempts from the stripe to increase the edge to 56-54. Mayo continued her strong fourth quarter by drawing a foul on a drive to the rack. She made both of her attempts to tie the score. Bonin and Mosley each committed turnovers, which led to the hosts having the ball with the shot clock turned off. The final play saw Bonin have a contested look at a three from the right wing, but the potential game-winner was air-balled as the contest headed to overtime. Mayo scored six of the Ravens seven points in the fourth quarter.

Hopkins tallied the first six points of the extra quarter all from the free throw line as Queens led 62-56 with 4:04 left. Thacker cut the Raven deficit to three, 62-59 when she put the ball on the floor behind a screen and hit a step-back three-ball from the right wing. The teams kept trading buckets as Cooney connected from the restricted area, Bonin buried a jumper, Thacker made a layup and Crosland converted a jumper with 54 seconds to go. Thacker missed a three, while Bonin knocked down an attempt from the line to make it a two-possession game 69-63 with 38 ticks left. Cooney made another layup from down low, but that was the closest the Ravens would come as they fell 73-66.

The Ravens return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 6 when they travel to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Le Moyne College at 1:00 p.m.
