Women’s Basketball Falls Behind Early, Loses to Assumption 72-52

WORCESTER, Mass. (December 7, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team hit the road for their first of four games away from campus as the Crimson and Grey dropped a 72-52 decision to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption College Thursday evening. With the win, the Greyhounds race to 2-6, 1-6 NE10 while the Ravens fall to 4-7, 1-6 NE10.

Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) and Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) led the Ravens with 11 and 10 points respectively. Mosley added a game-high five assists and three steals to go along with three boards. Making her first career start, freshman forward Hannah Martin (Woodland Hills, Calif.) racked up six points and a team-best six caroms. Senior Diondra Woumn (Lynn, Mass.) was productive in 15 minutes off the bench as she added eight points, four rebounds, and two blocks.

For the Greyhounds, forward Morgan O'Donnell tallied 23 points, five rebounds, and two blocks while Morgan O'Brien joined her teammate in double-figures with 17 markers, five boards, and four helpers. The hosts outshot (45.8%-to-37.5%), outrebounded (38-to-29) and outscored (34-to-16 points in the paint) the Ravens over the course of the contest.

Assumption began the duel with seven straight points off a three-ball, a layup, a steal and scoop into the net. The 7-0 lead forced the Ravens into an early timeout. The Greyhound run continued as O'Donnell sank a jumper to move ahead 9-0. Assumption's edge increased to 13-0 before Woumn tallied the Ravens first bucket using a lay-in underneath the rack. Franklin Pierce cut the first quarter deficit to single figures when Thacker buried a three-ball from the right corner as FPU trailed 15-7 with 2:55 remaining. The Greyhounds lead improved to double digits before Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine) drained two attempts from the charity stripe to decrease the deficit back down to eight 19-11 as the quarter ended.

Franklin Pierce notched a 6-2 mini-run to start the second quarter. Mayo drained a mid-range 20-foot jumper from the top of the circle, Mosley followed with a layup and Woumn banked in her attempt from the left elbow. The Ravens trailed 21-17 as the Greyhounds took a timeout. Following the stoppage, the game of runs continued as the Greyhounds poured in a 19-6 binge of their own over the final seven minutes of the half to head into the break with a 40-23 lead.

A Martin jumper just 14 seconds into the third quarter brought down the Assumption advantage to 15, but the hosts would continue to add points to their total. Franklin Pierce could not come any closer as they lost the conference showdown.

The Ravens return to the hardwood next Saturday, December 16 for their final non-conference duel of the season at Queens (N.Y.) for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
