Shorthanded Ravens Fall to Chargers 56-46

RINDGE, N.H. (January 18, 2017) – Northeast-10 Conference opponent the University of New Haven Chargers defeated the Franklin Pierce University Ravens 56-46 on Wednesday evening in a packed Fieldhouse. With the win, the Chargers improve to 3-13, 2-9 NE10 and the loss was the Crimson and Grey's 14th of the season.

Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) scored a game-high 12 points and matched a personal best with nine rebounds, it was the third straight game Thacker recorded nine boards and the fourth consecutive contest with eight or more caroms. Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) added 11 markers, two assists, two rebounds and a steal. Cameryn Wilson (Newport News, Va.) chipped in 10 points off the bench with three helpers, two thefts and one board. Mikayla Deguire (Watervilet, N.Y.) grabbed a game and career-high 10 rebounds.

For New Haven, four players scored in double figures, three of them were starters and they were led by Sade King's 12 point, six rebound, three assist performance. The Chargers tallied 21 points off Raven turnovers compared to FPU's eight and added 11 second chance points to the hosts two.

The game was close during the opening moments as the two opponents swapped points. The Chargers took an eight point, 16-8 lead thanks to a 10-2 scoring run using two transition threes by Kim Talley and Khayla Trowell with a Sade King jumper from the high post sandwiched in between the downtown connections.

Thacker ended the run by knocking down a catch and shoot trey from Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) to make it 16-11. Wilson drove the lane for a jumper down low and on the next possession Talley matched Wilson with a bucket of her own to make it 18-13 with 2:26 left in the first. Both teams however held the opponent scoreless over the final two minutes and change.

Four in a row by the guests brought their lead to a first half best nine, 22-13. The Ravens went to work using a 9-2 binge which made the contest a one possession game. Middleton started the run by finding Deguire down low for a layup off the glass. When New Haven brought the ball up the court after the Deguire make, Thacker anticipated the pass, poked the rock loose to Middleton who drove down low for the uncontested fast break layup.

Over the next three minutes the game remained scoreless until Wilson stole the ball and found Middleton for another fast break score which made it 22-19 in favor of the Chargers. Alexandria Kerr temporarily stopped the run by converting a jumper, but Thacker sieged momentum back with a trey outside on the wing off a beautiful driving no look dime from Wilson.

The Ravens scored the final six points of the stanza as Deguire cleaned up a missed layup for two, Wilson drained a three-ball from the parking lot off a pick and roll play and Thacker buried two freebies to head into the half ahead by three, 29-26.

In the third, New Haven started the frame outscoring the hosts 13-3 to take a seven point, 39-32 advantage. Junior Diondra Woumn (Lynn, Mass.) knocked down two free throws to make it a two score contest, but a few minutes later at the 1:56 mark, Kerr converted a corner three to push the Charger lead to eight. With 47 seconds to go, Campbell made a layup which made it 42-36 after three periods.

Middleton scored four straight points, the first two came as she scooped the ball off the glass and the other came on a Thacker block that led to a slash through the teeth of the Charger defense which cut the score to 42-40 in favor of New Haven.

The Chargers took a timeout and after the stoppage they went on a 10-2 run to take a 10 point, 52-42 lead with under two minutes to go. Campbell found Wilson for a step back three which brought the Raven deficit to seven. Allieyah Cubbage effectively ended any chance of a FPU comeback by hitting a layup which made the score 54-45 with 54 ticks left on the clock.

The Ravens return to the hardwood on Saturday when they travel to NE10 opponent Southern Connecticut State for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.
