Ravens Come Up Short Against SNHU

MANCHESTER, N.H. (November 22, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce women's basketball team headed out on the road to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Southern New Hampshire University and left the SNHU Fieldhouse with a 65-56 loss on Tuesday evening. The setback, the fourth in a row for the Crimson and Grey, drops them to 1-4, 0-3 NE-10 and the victory improves the Penmen to 3-2, and 1-1 in league play.

Leading the Ravens offensive attack was freshman guard Cameryn Wilson (Newport News, Va.) and her 12 points which was a team-best. Senior Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) scored 11 points while Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) racked up nine points, dished out six helpers and grabbed two rebounds. Junior forward Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine) was just three points shy of her second consecutive double-double with seven points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes off the pine.

SNHU forward Kylie Lorenzen tallied her second double-double of the season scoring a game-high 20 points and snagging a game-best 14 boards in the win. The sophomore was only 5-of-15 (33.3%) from the floor, but converted 10-of-13 (76.9%) attempts from the charity stripe. In 25 minutes of play off the bench, freshman forward Victoria Dean racked up 15 points on 6-of-9 (66.7%) efficiency including a 3-of-4 (75.0%) three-point performance.

FPU converted one more field goal than the hosts, but struggled from long range, was outshot at the free throw line and outscored by a 27-to-6 margin off turnovers. The Ravens did not lead once in throughout the match.

The Penmen opened the first quarter and the contest with an 8-0 scoring binge over the first two minutes of play which began with a Catherine Stinson connection from deep. A Campbell three-ball, a layup from Wilson and a jumper from Campbell brought the deficit to three, 10-7 midway through the quarter. SNHU responded with a 12-0 run fueled by six Lorenzen markers to take a 22-7 lead with 3:36 left in the first stanza. Campbell buried another shot from deep and made it a 12 point game, before FPU poured in the final four points of the quarter to cut the Penmen lead to 27-19.

Two Lorenzen freebies brought the lead back up to double figures before a five minute scoring drought ensued until Mikayla Deguire (Watervilet, N.Y.) ended the scoreless streak with a bucket. Two long range jumpers by Dean bookended a run that built SNHU's lead to 38-24 with a minute on the clock. Raven guard Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) knocked down a jumper to put her team down 12, 38-26 at the intermission.

Southern New Hampshire took their largest lead of the game at 46-28 midway through the third quarter thanks to an 8-2 run and a Dean three-ball. The Ravens responded with an 8-0 run of their own as Wilson powered home four points to bring their deficit down to a manageable, 10 at 46-26. However SNHU scored four points to the Ravens two and held a 50-38 lead as the buzzer sounded.

FPU kept coming within 10 points, but couldn't get over the hump until it was too late as the hosts bumped their lead up to a fourth quarter best at 65-50. FPU tallied the final six points in the contest and fell to their conference rival.

The Ravens return to the Fieldhouse on Sunday where they hope to end their losing skid versus non-conference opponent Holy Family at 1:00 p.m.
