Campbell’s Career Contest Fuels Raven Victory

PHILADELPHIA (November 11, 2016) – Senior guard Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) scored a career-high 19 points on an impressive 5-of-7 showing from downtown as the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 68-59 victory over Goldey-Beacom on Friday evening.

Campbell played 34 minutes and shot 7-of-11 (64%) from the hardwood. She also grabbed two rebounds and came up with one theft. Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) came off the bench and recorded 17 points in her first career collegiate contest. The freshman guard added five caroms and handed out two assists.

Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) dished out a team-high eight helpers and Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) came down with 12 boards to go along with three blocks. The win was also Head Coach Jeanette Wedo's first of her Raven career.

Campbell drained a three-ball assisted by Middleton to score the first points of the Ravens season, on their first offensive possession to take a 3-2 lead. Palma followed a missed Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) three pointer with a rebound and a put back to increase the Raven advantage to three, 5-2.

Nina Bartlette poured in a layup from the paint to cut their deficit to one, 5-4 with 5:38 remaining in the first quarter. The Ravens embarked on a 9-3 scoring run with four points coming from Mosley layups. Mikayla Deguire (Watervilet, N.Y.) put a shot off the glass which extended the Crimson and Grey's lead to a quarter high seven, 16-9.

Lighting guard Destiny Harper knocked in a shot from beyond the arc doled out from Britani Bryson which made it a two possession game. Freshman Cameryn Wilson (Newport News, Va.) ended the stanza by hitting two freebies from the charity stripe and the Ravens headed into the second quarter with a six point, 18-12 lead.

The quarter remained scoreless in the first few seconds as Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine) followed up a Thacker miss with an offensive board, and a put back shot to go up a game-high eight in the early stages of the second quarter. A 7-0 scoring binge by the Lighting fueled by a Tanner Turner-Rush three pointer put GB in the driver's seat only down one point.

Over the next few trips down the court, both teams swapped points before Mosley hit a three to increase the Raven lead to four. Five consecutive Lighting points gave them their first lead since the first quarter as a Britani Bryson theft set up a Lexi Bruno layup. Down a point, Campbell scored with 28 ticks left to put the Ravens up one, 33-32 at the intermission.

A Marisa Howard steal set up a Britani Bryson jumper to regain the advantage for the Lighting on the first possession of the new half. The Ravens responded with a game-changing 15-0 scoring run with Campbell draining two shots from long range to put her squad up 14, 48-34 with 3:53 left in the third.

Six straight points from Goldey-Beacom were matched by two Thacker free throws which put the Ravens back up by double-figures, but Nina Bartlette brought the Crimson and Grey's lead back down to eight with 21 seconds left using a pair of freebies of her own.

Campbell began the final period by hitting a three pointer to push the Ravens lead back to 11. A run by the Lighting brought them within two possessions, but Mosley knocked down a jumper to end the GB run. With 4:10 left in the game, Mara Poch stole the rock which led to a Bruno layup to make it a five point game.

Sarah Middleton responded with a clutch three pointer on the next trip down the floor which put the game away.

The Ravens wrap up their trip to Philly tomorrow versus the host USciences with tip-off slated for 2:00 p.m.
