Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime at Le Moyne, 75-72

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (January 30, 2016) -- Five members of the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team finished in double digits, but it was not enough to take down Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at Ted Grant Court, as the Dolphins came away with a 75-72, overtime victory.

With the loss, the Ravens drop to 11-8 overall and 8-6 in the conference. Le Moyne advances to 10-10 overall and 7-7 in the NE-10.

The Ravens fell behind early in the first but sophomore guard Jemma Thacker (Aldgate, Australia) tied the game with a jumper halfway through the quarter, making it 8-8. Scoring would continue to be back-and-forth through the last few minutes of the first, but senior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) hit the final hoop of the quarter with seconds to go, allowing the Ravens to take the lead, 16-14

Junior forward Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) put up a shot to push the Ravens further ahead early in the second, 18-14. Dolphins senior forward Maggie Brown and senior guard Vandell Andrade then connected for five points as Le Moyne took the lead with seven minutes to go, 19-18. Senior guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) regained the lead with a three-pointer, making it 21-19.

A 6-2 Raven run followed, with Palma, Gardner and senior guard Jasmyne Fogle (Bridgeport, Conn.) all chipping in to set Franklin Pierce five points ahead, 29-24.

The Ravens would get quiet as the first half came to a close, and they surrendered enough points for Le Moyne to come within a point, 29-28, on two good free throws by junior guard Ailayia Demand. Fogle hit a triple with a minute to go which would conclude the first half scoring, and the Ravens led 32-28 at the break.

The third quarter began as a back-and-forth scoring match, with Thacker hitting another three to put the Ravens out front for a small lead, before Le Moyne sophomore forward Courtney Webster hit a jumper to tie the game at 41-41.

Palma and Thacker connected for the next five Franklin Pierce points, and Thacker drained another shot from behind the arc to put the Ravens out front, 46-43, at the four minute mark.

Senior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) had a fast-break layup, which Thacker followed with another three-pointer, setting the Ravens ahead again, 53-48, with 30 seconds to go. Bastian secured the lead with two free throws to end the quarter, Franklin Pierce leading 55-50.

In the final quarter, Charette scored the first four points for the Ravens, making it 59-54, but the scoring would halt from there, giving Le Moyne the chance to catch up and tie the game, 59-59. Senior guard Lauren Salzbrenner hit the equalizing triple.

Gardner put the Ravens back out front, 65-61, with a three-point shot, but with just over a minute to go, Brown hit a layup to tie the game, and the Dolphins sent the game into overtime, 65-65.

Charette hit a huge three-pointer with just over a minute to go in OT, putting the Ravens out front, 72-69. But, back-to-back fouls on the Ravens gave points to the Dolphins at the free-throw line and would lead to the Ravens' loss on the road, 75-72.

Leading the scoring for Franklin Pierce were Thacker with 16 points, Charette with 15 points, Gardner with 11, and Bastian and Palma, both with 10. The team shot 54.2% (26-48) in the field and 73.3% (11-15) on free throws, with 26 points coming off the bench.

Le Moyne totaled 50% (29-58) in the field and 71.4% (15-21) from the line. Leading the Dolphins in scoring was Brown, with 18 points.

Ravens return home on February 3 against Saint Anselm at 5:30 p.m.
