Shooting goes cold as Women’s Basketball falls at Bentley, 60-39

WALTHAM, Mass. (November 21, 2015) - The Franklin Pierce Women's Basketball team faced a familiar conference foe on Saturday afternoon, as they traveled to Bentley University looking to grab a 2-0 in-conference record. However, the Ravens fell behind in the first half and were unable to recover as they fell to the Falcons 60-39 at Dana Athletic Center.

With the loss, the Franklin Pierce falls to 1-1 overall (1-1 Northeast-10) while Bentley grabs a 4-0 overall record (2-0 Northeast-10) and remain atop the conference in the Northeast Division.

Franklin Pierce fouls early in the game allowed the Falcons to get on the board first, and pull away in the half. Senior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass) and senior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn) did most of the scoring for the Ravens in the first quarter of play.

Charette started the scoring run with two buckets, and Bastian following behind her with a jumper of her own. The duo totaled up 11 points over the ten minutes, pushing Franklin Pierce to the lead after one quarter of play.

Going into the second quarter, the Ravens held a one-point advantage over the Falcons, 14-13. However, the second would be a quiet quarter for the Ravens, as they only put up four points in the ten minutes. Falcons sophomore guard Lauren Green got hot from the floor, as she sunk two three-point shots while fellow sophomore guard Trevena Bennett had an impact play, sinking three free throw shots after getting fouled on a three-point attempt.

Bentley would push past the Ravens scoring 20 points in the second quarter, before the time would expire and the first half of play would end. The Ravens would enter the locker room at half with a 33-18 defecit.

In the third quarter junior forward Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn) scored the first two points for the Ravens in their attempt to catch the Falcons. Bentley junior forward Jen Gemma had other plans was able to make three layups in the same time period.

Entering the fourth quarter 50-32, favoring the home team, the Ravens fell even further behind with 10 unanswered Falcon points. Behind a Bennett three point shot, that put the Ravens 23 points behind, a point they could not recover from.

Junior guard Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y) scored Franklin Pierce's only three-point shot of the afternoon with 4:26 left in the game.

Overall Ravens shot 26.7% (16-60) from the floor, while Bentley was able to 37.3% (19-51) Franklin Pierce made it to the line seven times shooting 71.4% (5-7) while the Falcons made it to the line 21 times 76.2% (16-21). Ravens put up 24 points in the paint, and 16 off the bench. Defensively they were able to make 37 rebounds, and four steals.

Leading the scoring was Charette with nine points on the night, followed by Bastian with eight. Junior guard Jasmyne Fogle (Bridgeport, Conn.) recorded eight rebounds, with Palma recorded five.

Bentley's Gemma led their scoring with 17 points, followed by Lauren Green with 11 points. Sophomore guard Cassie Smith recorded eight rebounds.

The Ravens return home Tuesday November 24th where they will play host to Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at 5:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
